Sorry, Drake Maye: Caleb Williams ended the debate on the No. 1 NFL draft pick

The latest 2024 NFL mock draft from Trevor Sikkema at Pro Football Focus just dropped. Caleb Williams is still going No. 1.

With Daniel Jones struggling when healthy, and now potentially out for the year with a knee injury, the New York Giants will likely finish within striking distance of Caleb Williams and Drake Maye. In a scenario in which they finish at the bottom of the NFL, they could get aggressive to ensure this season is not the start of a long-term trend of losing.

Williams struggled mightily during the middle part of the college football season, making few big plays and a lot of turnover-worthy plays (regardless of whether the defense actually snagged an interception) versus Arizona and Notre Dame. However, Caleb was outstanding against Washington last weekend. His performance quieted a lot of doubts about his status as the top pick. If Caleb had been slipping on the board, the Washington game restored his place at the top.

North Carolina’s Drake Maye is the next quarterback to come off the board in Sikkema’s projection, heading to the Chicago Bears at No. 2. He’s joined by Oregon’s Bo Nix (No. 6, Los Angeles Rams) in the top 10, followed by Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. (No. 12, Atlanta Falcons) and Michigan’s J.J McCarthy (No. 26, San Francisco 49ers) in the first round.
