Somerset goes 1-2 over two-day span
Apr. 22—Somerset had rediscovered their offensive mojo after a midweek series victory over Casey County, and they were hoping that would translate to a trio of games over the course of Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, they were only able to claim one victory out of the three games.
Hosting Madison Central on Friday, the Jumpers just didn't have enough offense to stay with the Indians as they fell 10-4. Cayden Cimala, Caynon Sizemore, Connor Roberts and Connor Vanderploeg each had one RBI apiece in the loss. Cimala, Roberts, Sizemore and Isaiah Lewis all had one stolen base as well. Somerset used Luke Poynter, Roberts and Colyer White on the mound in the game. Poynter earned the loss, going four and two-third innings and allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Madison Central was led by junior Sam Coleman with three RBI's.
In their first game on Saturday, the offense scored six runs in the fifth inning, with the defense and pitching allowing just two hits, as Somerset defeated George Rogers Clark 8-0. Kole Grundy led the way with four RBI's and a home run. Blake Abbott added two RBI's, with Cimala and Vanderploeg each adding one apiece. Cimala, White and Lewis each had a stolen base. Lewis earned the win on the mound, allowing no runs on just two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Bryson Stevens earned the save, pitching the final inning and allowing no hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The offensive struggles continued in their second game as they played the hosting Mercer County Titans. Somerset managed just two runs, while the Titans scored in almost every inning as they defeated the Jumpers 12-2 in five innings. Abbott and Grundy each had one RBI in the loss, with Cimala adding a stolen base. The Jumpers used Raygan New, Stevens and Roberts on the mound. New had the loss, throwing for three innings while allowing nine runs on four hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Mercer County was led by senior Will Johnson with three RBI's.
Somerset's record now sits at 14-8 and the Jumpers will begin a district series against Pulaski County on Monday on the road.
