Somerset Berkley boys track excel at Coaches Invitational: Top performers Jan. 22-27

BOSTON — There were great performances from Somerset Berkley boys track and field athletes on Saturday.

Senior Camden Rose broke his own school record in the 300 meter, winning the Small Schools MSTCA Coaches’ Invitational in Boston with a time of 34.9. He jumped to No. 1 in the state. The 4x200m relay Rose, Nicholas Scanlon, Landon Richardson and Brady Camara placed fourth overall with a time of 1:35.34.

Other top performers include Andrew Heroux in the 600 with a state qualifying time of 1:29.33, Scanlon (300; 39.1), Richardson (55 dash; 6.91) and high jump (5'8"), Camara finished (55 dash; 6.95) and Hutch Mosely finished (shot put; 40'8.25").

Hockey

Somerset Berkley 5, Apponequet 1

Luke Gauvin netted a hat trick and an assist to help the Raiders clinch their second straight South Coast Conference title with a win against Apponequet. Jack Rothwell and Kien Stafford (three assists) also netted goals for SBR (9-1-1). Nate Melo finished with two assists. Brandon Silva had 23 saves in net.

Diman/Durfee/Westport 8, Upper Cape 2

Brady Sullivan, Jared Martins, Aidan Farias, and Evan Camara all scored for the Bengals on a Senior Night win against Upper Cape. Jacob Almeida and Bryce Medeiros were in the assist column for Diman/Durfee/Westport (11-3-1, 8-1 in Mayflower).

The Raiders went undefeated on the day at the Carver tournament. Undefeated on the day for SBR (11-7) were Adrian Borges (106), Alex Javier (126), James Phenix (150) and Aidan Sylvia (175).

Friday

Boys Basketball

The Somerset Berkley boys basketball team clinched a playoff berth in the state tournament after beating Durfee. Finn Bjork had a team-high 21 points, 21 rebounds and a loud dunk in the second half. Dom Taylor connected on all four field attempts from distance in the fourth quarter to finish with 12 points. Brendan McDonald had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists. Max Finlaw finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks. Colten Pacheco ended with eight points for SBR (10-1; 7-1). Jahmier Stephenson and Jeyden Espinal each finished with 17 points for Durfee (7-6). Eric Lucas chipped in with nine points and Avonte Lamore scored seven points.

Girls Basketball

Westport 79, Fairhaven 31

The Wildcats clinched a berth in the state tournament after beating Fairhaven on the road. Korynne Holden scored a season-high 32 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out six assists and had nine steals. Sarah Perry had 13 points, 11 rebounds, collected five assists and two blocks. Julia George finished with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Other scorers include Skylar Rezendes (eight), Kylie Hazel (six), Meghan Molloy (four) and Jenna Egbe (two).

Durfee 42, Somerset Berkley 31

Maggie O’Connell netted a game-high 13 points to lead the Hilltoppers past non-league opponent Somerset Berkley. Julia Hargraves and Maddie Hargraves each scored nine points for Durfee (7-6). Bethany Moniz had a team-high 10 points for the Raiders. Makenzie Pires finished with eight points for SBR (7-6).

Case 54, Diman 28

Emma Plante scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lift the Cardinals past Diman. Liberty Gazaille had 12 points and nine rebounds while Kaylin Hajder finished with 10 points and six rebounds for Case (9-5, 4-4 in SCC). Cindy Bui had a team-high 10 points for Diman (4-6) while Courtney Boies and Jada Figueroa each ended with four points.

Boys Swimming

Bridgewater-Raynham 93, Durfee 78

The Hilltoppers dropped their meet against league opponent Bridgewater-Raynham. Seth Vandenburgh won the dive event with a score of 167.90. He joined Forrest Malo, Will Pierce and Will Rumsey to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:55.18. Michael Harrington took second place in the 500 free (5:58.80). The 400 free relay team of Harrington, Jack Fitzgerald, Omar Mahmoud, and Rumsey placed second in the 400 free relay with a personal-best 4:15.26.

Girls Swimming

Bridgewater-Raynham 93, Durfee 89

Despite a big day for Hilltopper swimmers, they fall to Bridgewater-Raynham. Avery Antunes (2:46.06), Gillian Tiburtino (3:13.62), and Hailey Alves (3:21.99) swept the 200 IM event. The trio of Rachael Silva (256.80), Casey Carvalho (194.75), and Maddy Ferreira (192.80) swept the diving competition. Antunes and Tiburtino also joined forces with Abigail Saunders and Paitynn Botelho to win the 400 free relay (4:58.23). Leah Rodrigues (100 backstroke), Botelho (500 free) and Kasey Juarez (500 free) achieved personal-best times. Claire Bjerre also swam well in the 100 breaststroke.

Thursday

GIrls Indoor Track

Three time was a charm for Case track and field athlete Hannah Santos. Santos broke her own school record in the high jump with a leap of 5'4" against league opponent Seekonk. The leap qualified Santos for the All-State meet. She had previously snapped the record twice.

Boys Basketball

Atlantis Charter 49, Falmouth Academy 40

Mickey Pimental scored a game-high 23 points to help lead the Tritons to a win against Falmouth Academy. Other top scorers include DJ Adediran (eight), Marv Antoine (six), Nate Benivedes (six), Izzy Aponte (five) and Kody Caton (one). Genald George had rebounds and a block for Atlantis Charter (6-6).

Wednesday

Ice Hockey

The Raiders scored early and often on Wednesday, running away with an 11-3 victory over Greater New Bedford. Luke Gauvin and Kien Stafford each scored a hat trick for SBR (8-1-1). Other goal scorers were Mason Sullivan, Adyn Marcos, Dylan Messier, Gabriel Gonsalves and Jack Rothwell. Madden Huck stopped eight shot in net for the win.

Diman/Durfee/Westport 9, South Shore Tech 3

Jacob Almeida and Jacoby Brouliard each netted a pair of goals to lift the Bengals to a win over South Shore. Kane Aguiar, Jack Bouchard, Landen Freitas and Bryce Medeiros each scored a goal. Aidan Farias recorded his first goal of the season.

Boys Basketball

Upper Cape 57, Diman 41

The Bengals lost a physical game against visiting Upper Cape at home. Sam Perry led the way for Diman with a team-high 13 points. Alex Decoste and Ian Campbell-Morales had solid minutes off the bench for Diman (4-7).

Girls Basketball

Westport 46, Avon 22

Korynne Holden scored a team-high 13 points, had four steals and two assists to help the Wildcats beat Avon. Julia George had eight points, three steals and three rebounds. Tess Sylvia also scored eight for Westport (9-1; 3-0 in Mayflower). Other scorers were Skylar Rezendes (seven), Sarah Perry (six), Jenna Egbe (three) and Kylie Hazel (two).

Somerset Berkley 51, New Bedford 48

The Raiders won a close game on the road against New Bedford. Mia Gentile scored a team-high 15 points for SBR (7-5). Makenzie Pires added 14 points while Anya Kanalski and Mikayla Seymour each finished with eight points.

Southeastern 51, Diman 30

The Bengals dropped a road game to league opponent Southeastern. Evey Fernandes led Diman (4-4) with a team-high nine points. Lizzy Kinnane chipped in with six points.

Wrestling

Durfee 51, Southeastern 18

The Hilltoppers recorded a home win against Southeastern. Winners for Durfee (2-22) were Ricardo Correia, Seth Chuon, Carlos Gomez, Riley Jacob, Anthony Montecinos, Ladaynian Mendes, Lucas DeCampos, Thomas Louisme and Josh Yentz.

Tuesday

Girls Basketball

Durfee 40, Dennis Yarmouth 36

The Hilltoppers moved to .500 on the season after beating non-league opponent Dennis-Yarmouth at home.Maggie O'Connell scored a team-high 12 points for Durfee (6-6). Other scorers include Julia Hargraves (seven), Jadah Johnson Scott (seven), Maddie Hargraves (six), Avery Layne (four), Evangeline Sousa (three) and Camryn Letendre (one).

Case 56, Dighton-Rehoboth 35

Liberty Gazaille netted a team-high 16 points to lead the Cardinals past league opponent Dighton-Rehoboth. Lily Picard added 14 points and Brooke Perron finished with nine points for the Cardinals (8-5; 4-4 in SCC).

Somerset Berkley 56, West Bridgewater 33

Mia Gentile poured in a game-high 19 points to help lead the Raiders past West Bridgewater. Mikayla Seymour chipped in with 16 points and Anya Kanalski added nine points for SBR (6-5; 5-3 in SCC).

Somerset Berkley 72, West Bridgewater 42

Finn Bjork scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Raiders to their third straight win against West Bridgewater. Max Finlaw added 11 points and Mason Medeiros finished with 10 points. Other scorers were Cam Hoyle (eight) and Brendan McDonald (seven points, five rebounds and five assists).

Dighton-Rehoboth 58, Case 41

Cayden Gonsalves scored a team-high 22 points for the Cardinals on the road in Dighton-Rehoboth's win. Landon Cayton finished with 10 points for Case (7-5; 4-4 in SCC).

Wrestling

New Bedford 57, Durfee 19

The Hilltoppers dropped a tough meet against league opponent New Bedford on the road. Winners for Durfee were Carlos Gomez, Kayden Chaney, Thomas Louissme and Josh Yentz.

Boys Swimming

New Bedford 110, Durfee 75

Seth Vandenburgh (180.45), Logan Vandenburgh (158.40) and Micah Ross (150.35) sweep the diving event for the Hilltoppers in New Bedford's victory on the road. The 200 free relay team of Jack Fitzgerald, Vandenburgh, William Pierce and William Rumsey collected a first place finish. Omar Mahmoud placed second in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke while Michael Harrington took second in the 200 and 500 free events for Durfee (5-4).

Girls Swimming

New Bedford 121, Durfee 63

The Hilltopper trio of Rachael Silva (234.60), Casey Carvalho (193.65) and Madison Ferreira (184.85) sweep the diving competition in New Bedford's win on the road. Abigail Saunders finished in second place in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Kasey Juarez had personal-best times in the 200 and 500 free events. Avery Antunes placed second in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Antunes and Saunders also competed in the second place 200 and 400 free relay teams with Regan Melo, Gillian Tiburtino and Zoie Mussote.

Monday

Boys Basketball

Somerset Berkley 71, Dartmouth 54

The Raiders remain unbeaten on the road Monday, winning their sixth straight away from home as SBR collected a big win against Dartmouth. Brendan McDonald led the Raiders (8-1; 6-1 in South Coast Conference) with a game-high 26 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Dom Taylor contributed 16 points and eight rebounds. Max Finlaw scored 11 points and collected four steals. Mason Medeiros finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Bengals won a hard-fought game at home against neighboring Atlantis Charter. Anthony DeJesus had a game-high 29 points. Sam Perry, Si’Air Neal, and Sakai Silver finished with nine points each. Mickey Pimentel led the way for the Tritons with a team-high 23 points. Nate Benivedes added 12 points and DJ Adediran finished in double figures with 10.

Girls Basketball

Diman 36, Holbrook 33

Cindy Bui scored a game-high 18 points to help the Bengals beat Holbrook. Lizzy Kinnane finished in double figures with 13 points for Diman (4-3).

Boys Indoor Track

Bishop Feehan 57, Diman 43

The Bengals fell to non-league opponent Bishop Feehan. Andrew Gesner placed first in the 300 (40.40) and took second placein the long jump (17'4). Phoenix Bennett finished in first place in the long jump (17' 7) and third place in the 55 (7.10). Cashton Richard came in first in the high jump (5'4) and took second in the 55 hurdles (9.22). Izayah Summers had two second-place finishes in the mile (5:33) and 600 (1:43) along with a third-place showing in the long jump (16'6). Steve Guzman placed second in shot put (34'1).

Girls Indoor Track

Bishop Feehan 65, Diman 35

The Bengals came up short against non-league opponent Bishop Feehan. Inez Medeiros was a double winner in the 300 (43.86) and 55 dash (7.67). Emma Foley also won two events — the 55 hurdles (9.42) and long jump (16'2). Grace Flattery took first place in the high jump (5'0) and third place 55 (7.98). Other top performers were Isabelle Chekares (600; 1:49), Alexah Pedder (1000; 3:26) and Lylah Thibeault (2-mile; 14:09).
