Social media reacts to UNC escaping Duke Blue Devils’ nightmare
The North Carolina Tar Heels hosted the Duke Blue Devils Saturday night in a battle for the victory bell.
The game featured many moments, highs, and lows for UNC, with frustration taking center stage for the majority of the night. Not because UNC did not have full control for most of the game but more so of it being a kicking affair than a scoring one with significant struggles in the red zone.
Despite UNC being the superior team on paper, Duke was able to stick around due to onside kicks and inability to finish drives. A game that should have been out of reach continued to play out as a nightmare, with time seemingly taking forever to end, giving Duke more opportunities.
Those opportunities were enough for the Blue Devils to pounce, snagging the lead with five minutes left even, with UNC knocking on the door of a three-score lead multiple times through the night.
Boneheaded decisions were made like an all-out blitz that had even Madden experts questioning UNC’s defensive coordinator Gene Chizik.
The game had social media in a frenzy, pointing fingers and calling for coaching changes. Meanwhile, others joked about UNC’s struggles with backup quarterbacks. The Tar Heels dominated in offensive yards, but the double-overtime ending paints a different picture.
The Tar Heels were able to create some magic on the offensive end, even without a Drake Maye touchdown pass, until two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Omarion Hampton finished with 157 rushing yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Tez Walker torched the secondary for 7 receptions for 162 receiving yards.
Let us look at how social media reacted to the 47-45 double-overtime victory.
UNC tried the tush push lol

We have Hampton and we don’t use him on 2nd or 3rd down there #UNC

Dude, this red zone offensive play calling is going to cost us the game. Whatre we doing right now??
— UNC Humor (@UNC_Humor) November 12, 2023
I can call plays better than UNC staff can. It’s stupid frustrating to watch
— Jeff Davis (@22thesnowman) November 12, 2023

Don’t get it wrong, Noah Burnett. We REALLY appreciate your work and it’s putting points on the board.
But FGs aren’t a winning strategy.— Terri (@UNCTerri) November 12, 2023

Duke recovers onside kick – Again, UNC’s special teams fails it

I repeat… UNC is poorly coached.

Special teams is just so bad.

UNC going to have the curse of the backup QB strike again?

“a lot of teams in the country would love to be 7-3” incoming

There is almost no rotation for the UNC D line, can't leave the same dudes out there all game
— Terrance W. Williams (@TWTalkinBout) November 12, 2023
Man oh man oh man. This #UNC defense is once again getting gashed by a backup quarterback.
I feel like I’ve seen this movie before…
— Jacob Turner (@JacobTurnerTHI) November 12, 2023
This UNC defense is atrocious
— Antonio Blake (@ABlake54) November 12, 2023
UNC went up 26-14 to start the fourth, and of course hasn’t held the ball since. Awesome! https://t.co/tAfgcjbj9E

UNC keeps finding interesting ways to lose leads… @UNCFootball. Pathetic

Again UNC coaches take everything for granted and get burned. Literally you can run anything against Carolina and it will work. #DUKEvsUNC

Complete implosion by UNC football late into the season as usual.

I’m a bigger UNC fan than you’ll find. So i feel like it’s within my right to say this has been one of the most consistently fraudulent mid tier football programs in America for quite some time. Maybe they win this game. Maybe they don’t. But the point stands

UNC fans should not be surprised

In a year in which not many good jobs are likely to open, UNC could really have its pick of the market if it pulled the plug on this thing.
— Bud Elliott (@BudElliott3) November 12, 2023
Sorry folks but that was a catch for UNC. At worst it wound up “simultaneous” by both guys which always gets awarded to the receiver by rule, but his butt hit the ground anyway. And…even if they looked at it that call wouldn’t have been overturned. That kinda play actually…
— The Tech Man (@BuzzOffDwags) November 12, 2023
How does UNC all out blitz on 4th and 7. Wow. Fire Gene. I’ve seen enough. That was a catastrophic play call. #GoHeels
— Julian J. Carter (@JulianJCarter) November 12, 2023
What is UNC’s DC doing sending the house?
That’s a fireable offense.
— Raffles (@NoleBhoy) November 12, 2023
Because Cam Newton decided to play for Auburn in 2010, Drake Maye was never allowed to win anything at UNC in 2022 and '23
— Alex Kirshner (@alex_kirshner) November 12, 2023
UNC called a timeout and THAT’S what they called. Amazing.
— 💫🅰️♈️🆔 (@ADavidHaleJoint) November 12, 2023
A zero pressure from UNC and easy money over the top. DB doesn't even get a hand on him and is caught flat footed. oof.

41 seconds left to determine if I watch anymore UNC football, this season. The defense will never get better, as long as Chizik is there

Don’t matter about the sport; anytime UNC beats Duke, it’s a great day to be a Tarheel 🐏

Seeing the North Carolina fans storming the field in Chapel Hill is what makes college football so great.
Miss me with the UNC was ranked and favored nonsense. You beat your rival, you can rush the field all you want.
— Owen (@Alakazam_428) November 12, 2023
I’m sure Mack will talk about how great Drake is and how hard it is to win in college football “crazy upsets happen every week” but it seems like UNC underperforms every week as a double digit favorite. It’s a coaching and culture problem in his regime.
