Social media reacts as Iowa women’s basketball collects first Big Ten win in College Park

The Iowa Hawkeyes headed to College Park, Mayrland, looking to make a bit of history. In Maryland’s time in the Big Ten, Iowa hadn’t won there.

Senior guard Caitlin Clark and Iowa looked like they were rolling to a convincing, stress-free victory midway through. The Hawkeyes led the Terps 52-38 at halftime and scored the first two buckets of the second half to build their largest lead of the night, 18 points.

Maryland used a 13-0 run to erase a large chunk of the Hawkeyes’ lead in a hurry. Clark then made a 3-pointer with 5:31 left in the third quarter to extend the Hawkeyes’ lead to 61-53. But, Maryland responded with another 10-0 run to grab its first lead of the night.

Iowa ended the third quarter on a 12-3 run to regain a seven-point edge headed to the fourth.

With a raucous crowd against them, Iowa answered the call on the road. Clark had four assists in the fourth quarter, graduate guard Kate Martin scored seven points and Clark and junior guard Sydney Affolter added five points each.

After an Affolter offensive rebound, fifth-year guard Molly Davis effectively iced the road victory with a 3-pointer that put Iowa in front 89-80 with 41 seconds remaining.

Clark finished her night with 38 points and 12 assists as she knocked down seven 3-pointers and collected her 55th career double double.

Iowa (21-2, 10-1 Big ten) wound up walking out of the XFinity Center with a 93-85 road victory over Maryland (12-10, 4-7 Big Ten).

By night’s end, Hawkeye social media celebrated another key road win.
