Soccer roundup: Willmar Cardinals, Sartell Sabres tie to stay atop CLC race

Sep. 12—WILLMAR — After giving up a goal within the first minute of play, the Willmar boys soccer team settled in and earned a tie with Sartell on Tuesday.

Sartell (6-0-2 overall) drew a 2-2 tie with Willmar (5-0-2). Both teams are undefeated in Central Lakes conference matches with records of 3-0-2.

"I like that we did not give up after giving up such an early goal," Cardinals head coach Jeff Winter said. "It would've been easy to roll over."

Willmar capitalized midway through the second half with a pair of goals coming in back-to-back minutes to push the Cardinals to 2-1 lead.

Oslin Pastrana Sobalvarro knotted the game at 1-1 in the 59th minute and Isaac Zelaya Velasquez gave Willmar the lead in the 60th minute. Miguel Altamirano Toruno assisted on both of the Cardinals' goals.

"Those two quick goals gave us momentum and then we unfortunately gave up that equalizer," Winter said of Sartell's goal that came in the 70th minute. "It was probably the game you'd expect between the top two teams in the conference."

Willmar travels to Sauk Rapids at 5 p.m. Thursday.

"Sauk has been improving and they beat us there last year," Winter said. "I think we'll still have energy to give after tonight, which was a battle."
