Sixers 3 goals: Danny Green has to provide shooting, leadership

In this continued series, Sixers Wire looks at the 18 players, per Sportrac, that comprise the Philadelphia 76ers roster — 15 under contract and the three players on two-way deals — and gives each three goals for the 2023-24 season.

The new season begins on Oct. 26, and training camp begins on Oct. 3. Now is the time to begin previewing the new season of adventure that is Sixers basketball.

In this edition, Danny Green is the focus. The Sixers brought Green back on a non-guaranteed deal after playing for the Memphis Grizzlies and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2022-23 season. He played for the Sixers in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

For Green, his three goals are as follows in his return:

Provide shooting

Due to Green’s contract being non-guaranteed, he has to earn his spot to be on the roster. He ended up shooting 43.2% from deep in 11 games combined for Memphis and Cleveland after returning from a torn ACL and if he can provide that shooting for the Sixers early on, that will help his case to make the team. Philadelphia has seen his shooting before, but at 36, he now has to make his case again.

Provide leadership

Green is a great talker. This will be his opportunity to take some of the younger players under his wing and point them in the right direction. His impact should not only be on the younger guys, but on the mainstays as well as the Sixers continue to work through the James Harden saga.

Push the wing players

In order for Green to make the roster, he will have to have his eyes on the likes of Furkan Korkmaz and Danuel House Jr. Those are the guys who are ahead of Green on the depth chart, and the 36-year-old and the veteran will need to have a big training camp and preseason in order to earn his spot on this deep roster.
