Six wild stats from Schmitt's impressive start to MLB career originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Willie McCovey. Joe DiMaggio. John Bowker. Brett Pill.
Those are the names rookie Casey Schmitt now is being mentioned among after a four-hit game in the Giants' 6-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night at Chase Field.
Following his third MLB game, Schmitt now is 8-for-12 with two homers, two doubles and four RBI in his young career.
Because of his hot start, Schmitt joined several exclusive statistical clubs Thursday.
Schmitt and McCovey, a Giants icon, are the only two players in franchise history with eight hits in their first three MLB games.
Since RBI became an official MLB stat in 1920, Schmitt and DiMaggio, the Yankees legend, are the only two players with at least eight hits, four RBI and four runs scored in their first three games.

In the long, storied history of the Giants, only two players have started their careers with at least two hits and at least one run scored in three straight games: Schmitt and Bowker.

While Schmitt has made a lot of history with his bat, his defense has been his calling card in the minor leagues, and he showed off his arm against the Diamondbacks.
A natural third baseman, Schmitt started at shortstop Thursday night, and in the fourth inning, he fired the second fast assist in MLB this season, throwing the ball 92.7 mph to first base.

The Giants needed a spark this season and Schmitt is providing it while etching his name into the record books. His first MLB hit was a homer and he hasn't stopped crushing the ball since.

It's unrealistic to expect Schmitt to keep up this pace, but he's showing the Giants what he's capable of and forcing manager Gabe Kapler to find a spot for him in the lineup every day.
