Silverton's Sawyer Francis takes pair of hurdle bronzes at UIL Class 1A state championships

AUSTIN — Silverton's Sawyer Francis knew he had almost no margin for error to have any chance of winning his two hurdle races at the UIL Class 1A state championships, and any hurdles race has a minefield of potential errors.

Francis wasn't perfect, but he was good enough to leave with some hardware after his time of 15.12 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 40.21 in the 300 hurdles earned him two bronze medals behind favorites Stryker Reed of Gordon and Zeke Kasel.

Francis was also good enough to leave with a sense of accomplishment earned with a strong performance on the biggest stage.

"There were some really good people, a bunch of good hurdlers," Francis said. "There was a lot of competition. Looking at everybody's times, trying to compete, knowing how much work I put in, it was fun and it means a lot.

"It was a great competition and it was fun."

That last word is important after a race like he had.

"I knew that Zeke and Stryker were there and if I was going to get it, I had to go get it. It didn't happen, but it was fun," Francis said.
