Shuker sets sights on fresh targets after British Open loss
Lucy Shuker quickly set her sights on fresh targets after being beaten in the final of the LTA’s British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Nottingham.
Shuker, who is supported by the LTA’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Pathway, was beaten 6-2 6-3 by world No.3 and top seed Aniek van Koot in Sunday’s final.
The Dorset ace held an early break lead in the opening set but then lost six straight games to the Dutchwoman, who was ultimately too clinical as she won the title for the first time.
Despite some disappointment at losing on home soil, Shuker was pleased with her week overall - and is ready to continue working hard to go one step further.
“I’m really happy to get to the final this week,” she said on court after the match.
“It’s a shame I couldn’t go one further and win but Aniek you were pretty awesome today. Your backhand slice is ridiculous. I’m really happy overall to get to the final, it’s been a good week.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the LTA for their support and especially Rob Cross, who works so hard with me. We are going to have to work a bit harder after that Rob because I was given a bit of a beating there!”
The 42-year-old will now switch her focus to a busy summer which will culminate in the US Open at Flushing Meadows in early September.
