SHS boys finish undefeated bowling season

BRONSON — The Sturgis bowling teams took care of Vicksburg recently on the lanes.

The victory for the boys allowed them to finish unbeaten at 9-0 in Wolverine Conference action. The Trojans will be the top overall seed in the conference tournament on Friday. It's the first unbeaten season for Sturgis since 2019.

"Excellent night for the gents as a whole. Good things to come from them" Sturgis coach Scott Spahr said. "Ladies bowled unopposed, as Vicksburg does not have a girls team this season, and had a solid night."

The boys won the opening baker 128-127 but dropped the second 185-117. Vicksburg earned the bonus points.

Sturgis won the singles games, though. The Trojans picked up 877-838 and 890-692 victories (1,767 - 1,530).

Leading Sturgis was Lane Malone with games of 244 and 178 (422). Caleb Henson-Bohlen shot games of 184 and 168 for 352. Josh Groff shot a 188, Kasey Shank recorded a 182 and Andrew Matz shot a 165.

Even though the Lady Trojans did not compete, they did roll games of 118 and 121. Miley Holden shot games of 136 and 180 (316) to lead the way. Khara Kimes bowled games of 130 and 142 for 272 and Jaden Moore added games of 104 and 128 (232). Kortnie Matz rolled a single game of 223, Donna Henson-Bohlen added a 148 and Lydia Boland shot a 166 as well.

The Battle Creek Pennfield bowling team won the Trojan Invitational on Sunday.

This invitational was girls only, which saw Pennfield beat Coldwater in the finals. Bronson beat Sturgis to take third, this gave Sturgis a fourth-place finish.

There were 13 teams competing at the invitational.

"Girls did a very good job of grinding through qualifying and match play," Spahr said. "Just not quite able to get over the jump and close out in the semis."

Sturgis won the first baker matchup with Bronson in the consolation finals at 188-170. Bronson would win the next, 180-179, before sweeping the next two at 162-133 and 174-144.

During qualifying, Lydia Boland bowled games of 135 and 169 for a 304 while Kami Kimes bowled games of 129 and 169 for 298. Kortnie Matz shot a single game of 174. Miley Holden rolled a 138, Donna Henson-Bohlen rolled a 137 and Khara Kimes added a 131.

Last week, Sturgis won for the girls against Edwardsburg 28-2 and the boys won 19-11.

In the latest Division 2 Michigan High School Interscholastic Bowling Coaches Association poll, the Sturgis girls are ranked eighth. The boys are ranked ninth.

Three Rivers is second overall for the girls in Division 3, the Wildcat boys are ranked fifth.

Three Rivers won the boy's matchup, 28-2. Devin Svoboda rolled a 221, Theo Herrmann bowled a 191 and Lucan Hoercher bowled a 178. The Lady Wildcats beat Mattawan 30-0. Carley Krauss bowled a 195 game while Tayler Mohney rolled a 190 and Stefi Alexander shot a 168.

Last week, Three Rivers beat Otsego 23-7 for the boys and 25-5 for the girls. Three Rivers also won 29-1 over Paw Paw for the boys and 30-0 for the girls.

Burr Oak beats Constantine

The Burr Oak bowling team beat Constantine last week, 21-9.

The Bobcats won baker games 124-99 and 145-71 for 10 possible points. In singles games, Burr Oak won the opener 614-536 while Constantine won the second 625-579. The Bobcats won in total pins 1,193 - 1,161.

Jacob Trennepohl led Burr Oak with a 334 series (185-149). Haley Tillmon shot games of 168 and 124 for 292.

Burr Oak also dropped a 21-9 decision to Kalamazoo Christian. Trennepohl bowled games of 170 and 171 (341) while Tillmon shot 122 and 135 (257).

Burr Oak and Schoolcraft rolled to a 15-15 tie last week as well. Trennepohl rolled games of 191 and 187 for 378 while Tillmon added games of 128 and 148 (276). Breman Baldridge bowled a 267 (151-116).
