Sharks 4, Coyotes 3 (SO)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- San Jose center Patrick Marleau scored his second goal of a game in the second round of a shootout to give the Sharks a 4-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night.

Marleau beat Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith through the five hole to give the Sharks (24-8-6) the fourth victory in their last five games and their third straight shootout win.

Right winger David Moss had his first two-goal game of the season for the Coyotes, who have won only one of their last six games.

Center Joe Pavelski and right winger Brent Burns had a goal and an assist and center Joe Thornton had two assists for San Jose.

Goaltender Antti Niemi had 34 saves for the Sharks, who have two victories and an overtime loss in the first three of four games against the Coyotes this season. Niemi has not lost to the Coyotes in his last seven starts.

Smith had 28 saves for Phoenix (19-10-8) after being peppered for 103 shots in the first two games between the two this season. It was the Coyotes' fourth straight overtime game.

Moss scored his fourth goal of the season after a giveaway in the San Jose end for the only goal of the first period. Moss intercepted Matt Nieto's errant centering pass from behind his goal and fired a shot high past the glove side of Niemi for an unassisted goal at 7:48 of the first period.

Pavelski scored his 16th goal of the season on a shot from a severe angle to Smith's right to tie the score at 1 at 9:56 of the second period, with assists from Thornton and Burns. Thornton has 70 points in 65 career games against the Coyotes.

Moss redirected a centering pass from defenseman David Schlemko at the blue line for a 2-1 lead at 11:04 of the second period. Schlemko was activated before the game after missing the last three games with a lower body injury.

Marleau's power-play goal tied it at 2 later in the period after center Tommy Wingels brought the puck down the right side and fed Marleau in the slot for his 17th goal of the season.

Burns made it 3-2 lead midway through the third period on a centering pass from Pavelski behind the Coyotes' net.

Right winger Radim Vrbata tied the score at 3 on a power play goal at 13:35 of the third period after center Mike Ribeiro drew defenders to him on the right side before throwing a cross-ice pass to Vrbata, who beat Niemi from the left circle.
