Shannon, Domask earn First Team All-Big Ten honors

Mar. 12—The play of Terrence Shannon Jr. and Marcus Domask has propelled the Illinois men's basketball team to success all season.

On Tuesday, the Illini duo were rewarded by receiving First Team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches.

Shannon and Domask were joined by Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey from Purdue, Purdue guard Braden Smith and Northwestern guard Boo Buie on the First Team as selected by the coaches.

Domask earned Second Team honors as selected by the league media, while Maryland guard Jahmir Young was a First Team selection from the media vote.

This is the second First Team All-Big Ten honor of Shannon's Illinois career after he received First-Team distinction from the league's coaches last season and Second Team honors by the league's media.

Shannon is averaging 21.6 points, second in the Big Ten, despite missing six games because of a suspension after he was arrested in late December on a rape charge from an alleged incident in Lawrence, Kan.

Domask has started every game in his first season with the Illini after spending the past four seasons at Southern Illinois. The 6-foot-6 guard is second on the team in scoring at 16.0 points while averaging a team-high 34.1 minutes. Domask also averages 4.9 rebounds and a team-high 3.5 assists.

Domask and Shannon are the second pair of Illinois teammates to earn First Team All-Big Ten honors this decade after Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn received the same distinction in 2021. Prior to that, Illinois last had two players on the First Team All-Big Ten in 2006 with Dee Brown and James Augustine.

Eight different players earned Second Team honors with the split in the media and coaches voting. Michigan State guard Tyson Walker and Wisconsin guard AJ Storr were picked by both entities. Nebraska guard Keisei Tominaga and Iowa guard Tony Perkins joined young as Second Team selections by the coaches. In addition to Domask, Indiana forward Kel'el Ware and Minnesota forward Dawson Garcia were Second Team picks by the media.

The Third Team wound up with nine honored players, including Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins, who was a media selection. Iowa guard Payton Sandfort and Penn State guard Ace Baldwin Jr. were picked by both the coaches and media. The other media-only selections included Tominaga and Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton. The coaches-only Third Team picks were Garcia, Ware, Nebraska forward Rienk Mast and Northwestern guard Brooks Barnhizer.

Illinois (23-8) opens the Big Ten tournament at 5:30 p.m. Friday in a quarterfinal game against either Iowa or Ohio State at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
