Several area high school football teams to play in section championships

SAINT CLOUD – Central Minnesota will be well-represented in football section tournament championships.

Held across the area next Saturday, the games will be headlined by a ROCORI, Becker showdown in the Section 8-4A ‘chip. Holdingford, Foley and Albany will also be competing in different sections. Find their semifinal score and championship opponent below.

Section 5-2A

Three-seed Holdingford avenged its regular season loss to the second-seeded Kimball Cubs 34-26. The Huskers (7-3) advance to play in the championship against Eden Valley-Watkins (9-0) while the Cubs end their season 6-3. Holdingford lost to Eden Valley-Watkins 56-6 on Oct. 18 at home. The championship will be at 7 p.m. on Friday at St. John’s University.

Section 5-3A

Fifth-seed St. Cloud Cathedral (4-6) fell on the road at first-seed Annandale 48-8. The undefeated Cardinals (9-0) will play Foley (6-4) in the championship at 7 p.m. at St. Cloud Tech. The second-seeded Falcons beat three-seed Mora (4-6) in the semifinal. Foley and Annandale played Oct, 12 to a 21-6 Annandale win.

Section 6-3A

The top two seeds, New London-Spicer (6-3) and Albany (7-2) will face off in the championship at ROCORI High School. Albany beat three-seed Montevideo (6-4) in the semifinal 28-0 a week after the Thunder Hawks tested the Huskies in the regular season with a 43-42 loss. The Wildcats crushed Albany in the teams’ opener back on August 31 by a score of 48-20.

Section 8-4A

Top-seeded Becker (9-0) didn't have a problem with the four-seed, Princeton (7-3). The undefeated Bulldogs mauled the Tigers 45-6 for a trip to the section final. For the second time this year, Becker will be playing ROCORI (7-2), which beat Detroit Lakes 30-28 on the road in its semifinal game. The Lakers (7-2) and Bulldogs were the Spartans’ only losses during the regular season. Detroit Lakes won 27-25 on Sept. 1 and Becker won 20-0 on Oct. 6. The section championship is at 7 at Monticello.

Section 8-5A

In Sauk Rapids, the second-seeded Storm (7-2) fell in a close battle to third-seeded Elk River (4-6). The Elks won 38-35 after a fourth-quarter comeback didn’t materialize for Sauk Rapids like on Sept. 30, when the Storm won 30-28.
