The Westborough High girls' golf team, led by seniors and four-year starters Shelby Drayer and Abby Mahr, have enjoyed a successful spring season so far with eight wins in 10 matches.

“We have a great group of kids,” said Rangers’ second-year coach Karolyn Choate. “And we’re hoping more will keep coming into the program from the younger levels as we continue to progress. It’s all about getting a lot of experience on the golf course before joining the high school team.”

Westborough (8-2, 4-2 Mid-Wach) began the season with five straight wins, highlighted by the medalist honors scores of Drayer, Mahr and junior Ashley Huang, the top three golfers in the lineup. The Rangers defeated Nashoba, Hopkinton, Ayer-Shirley, Worcester and Quabbin.

Also helping with the overall team results in winning matches have been junior Nandita Ganesan, sophomore Italia Eddy, who attends Algonquin, senior Katie Richards and freshman Ellie Vacarrino.

Golf is a big part of Drayer’s life. When she’s not playing the game herself in high school competition or in recreational play on weekends, she is a caddy at Wellesley Country Club.

Asked about some of the keys to being a successful caddy, Drayer, who will enter Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. in the fall, said, “Getting out there on the course early and getting to know who you are caddying for. Also, you really have to pay attention and that begins with watching that very first drive on the first tee.”
