Section V hockey tournament scores: Batavia United survives against Canandaigua

The Section V hockey postseason is underway.

Two tournaments, separated between Class A and Class B, will determined which teams advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament in March.

Defending champion Pittsford owns the No. 1 seed in Class A, while Batavia Notre Dame United is the favorite in Class B.

Championship games are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 26 at RIT.

Class B semifinals

No. 1 Batavia Notre Dame United 5, No. 5 Canandaigua 4

Ivan Milovidov and Jameson Motyka both finished with two goals and an assist for United. Brady Johnson (one goal, one assist) also chipped in on offense.

Maddox Smith paced the Gray Wolves with two goals, while Jacob Benne (assist) and Garrett Richards also scored.

United faces Webster Thomas for the Class B title on Monday.

No. 3 Webster Thomas 5, No. 2 Webster Schroeder 2

Cam Hall and Ryan Goel both scored twice as the Titans return to the championship game.

Class A quarterfinals

No. 1 Pittsford 2, No. 8 Spartan Hockey 0

Keegan Garver scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period, with Brady McMahon earning an assist. Keegan Garver added an empty-net goal near the final minute.

Wilson Szydlo posted his third shutout of the season with 12 saves.

Logan Swartzenberg made 22 saves for Spartan Hockey (7-11-3).

Pittsford hosts Portside next Thursday in the semifinals.

No. 2 McQuaid 5, No. 7 Greece 2

McQuaid scored three goals in the third period to pull away.

Five different players scored for the Knights: Danny Wehle, Eoghan Maier, Lou Zaari, Matt Hill and Chase Brock. Matt Kozara had three assists.

Spencer Griffin and Camden Monks both registered a goal and assist for Greece (10-11-1). Stratos Triantafilou stopped 35 of 37 shots put his way.

McQuaid faces Penfield in the semifinals.

Penfield 4, Fairport 0

Thomas Herman made 31 saves to earn his 15th win and third shutout of the season for Penfield (15-6-0). Angelo Latore had a hat trick, while Ethan Murowski had the Patriots' other goal. Rory Gately and Mason Maksymiu were credited with two assists apiece.

Connor McRae totaled 23 saves for Fairport.

No. 5 Portside Royals 5, No. 4 Hilton 1

Class B quarterfinals

No. 5 Canandaigua 3, No. 4 Victor 1

Canandaigua goaltender Charlie Fuller made 42 saves. Tyler Shuler, Arthur Fuller and Brody Spinosa scored to put the Gray Wolves ahead 3-0 through two periods.

Chris Donnelly had Victor’s lone goal.

Canandaigua (9-8-4) travels to top seed Batavia Notre Dame United next Wednesday for the section semifinals.

Victor finishes 7-12-2.

No. 1 Batavia Notre Dame 6, No. 8 Geneseo/Avon/Livonia 1

Ivan Milovidov had United’s first three goals and finished with four, including an assist. Brady Johnson and Jake Hutchins (two assists) also tallied goals. Joe DiRisio picked up two assists.

Five of United’s six goals came in the second period.

Nicholas Lipome made 43 saves for Geneseo/Avon/Livonia, while Matthew Mulvaney recorded the team’s lone score.

Batavia Notre Dame United improves to 19-2-0.

No. 2 Webster Schroeder 5, No. 7 Churchville-Chili 3

Nicholas Sellitto totaled 2 goals and 3 assists for Schroeder (16-4-1), in a rematch of last season’s Class B championship game. Harrison Allen and Zach Broccolo each finished with a goal and an assist. Aiden Baldwin also scored, while Nolan Roughsedge had two assists.

Andrew Buxton, Parker Farnham and Ben Kanellis found the back of the net for C-C.

Schroeder faces Webster Thomas in the semifinals next Wednesday.

No. 3 Webster Thomas 4, No. 6 Aquinas 2

Nathan Scheirer, Logan Billone, Trevor Veno and Cam Hall all scored for Thomas. Michael Nappi made 23 saves in goal.

Connor Carey and Connor Williams were the scorers for Aquinas.

Class A preliminary round

No. 7 Greece 5, No. 10 Brighton/HF-L 4

Spencer Griffin scored two minutes into overtime to lift Greece.

The Bruins forced sudden death following Nick Gray’s goal with 27 seconds left in regulation.

Griffin finished with 2 goals. Jayden Gargana also scored twice, and Camden Monks added a goal.

Emmet Landt (three assists), Grant Peinkopfer and Patrick Rohr all scored for Brighton/HF-L. Liam Lawrence added two assists.

Greece (10-10-1) faces McQuaid in the Class A quarterfinals on Thursday.

No. 8 Spartan Hockey 2, No. 9 WFL Panthers 0

Spartan Hockey (8-10-3) faces top seed Pittsford in the Class A quarterfinals Thursday at the Tim Hortons Iceplex.

Class B preliminary round

No. 8 Geneseo/Avon/Livonia 5, No. 9 Irondequoit 2

Geneseo/Avon/Livonia (5-11-4) takes on No. 1 seed Batavia Notre Dame United on Thursday in the Class B quarterfinals.
