The Seattle Seahawks Get Hand Slapped Over Richard Sherman Injury Issue
Nearly a month ago, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said on 710 ESPN Seattle that cornerback Richard Sherman played with a “significant” knee injury for some portion of the 2016 season. Today, the National Football League announced that the Seahawks would only be issued a warning for not reporting the injury and no more punishment would be forthcoming on the issue.
It was first reported by ESPN’s Ron Jaworski that the Seahawks may have been faced with losing a second round draft pick over the matter, however this turned out to be untrue. Speculation on how severe the N.F.L. would scold Seattle for the infraction was anywhere from taking that draft pick to a fine.
The N.F.L. reviewed the intention the Seahawks would have had to hide Sherman’s injury and weighed arguments from Seahawks general manager John Schneider and others. In the end, the N.F.L. decided that the Seahawks misinterpreted league rules and Seattle was for all intents and purposes not punished.

The league did state that the matter would be taken into account, though, and if the Seahawks misinterpreted the same rule again a much more severe punishment might take place.
Sherman did not miss any real practice time, however, and never missed a game. Plus, he played in the year-end Pro Bowl showing that he was even healthy enough to play in a meaningless game. Sherman’s production also did not suffer after the time an injury may have taken place.
Schneider told the Seattle Times, “I think Pete (Carroll) — it was in a press conference at the end of the season and (he) was quite frankly was sticking up for the different bumps and bruises and issues that Richard had and I think that’s why they’ve gone ahead with this. But we feel like we didn’t do anything that was malicious at all.”
With the N.F.L.’s ruling today, Schneider was proved correct.
