Sean Payton says mocking Vikings 'Skol' clap was 'good playoff fun'

Minnesota Vikings fans at U.S. Bank Stadium went silent the moment Will Lutz drilled a field goal to give the New Orleans Saints a one-point lead with just 25 seconds left in Sunday’s divisional playoff.

In response, Saints coach Sean Payton was seen turning toward the sideline and doing his own version of the “Skol” clap, a tradition Vikings fans recently adopted from Icelandic soccer fans.

Though the move wasn’t caught by Fox cameras, pictures of Payton doing the clap surfaced on the internet and were even made into a GIF.

Asked to explain his actions on Tuesday, Payton said it was nothing but “good playoff fun” with a group of fans behind the Saints bench. (One presumes the bunch had their own type of “good playoff fun” with Payton when the Vikings were threatening to run away with the game in the first half.)

Payton didn’t say whether this prevented him from doing things like, say, instruct Saints defenders to keep every Vikings receiver in front of them. But we all know what happened next: Marcus Williams whiffed on Stefon Diggs and one of the greatest touchdowns in NFL playoff history knocked the Saints straight out of the playoffs.

That was presumably enough of a clapback for Vikings fans, who didn’t have a great relationship with Payton to begin with. Bountygate, of course, stemmed from the 2009 NFC championship game, when several Vikings players claimed the Saints defenders were trying to intentionally hurt Brett Favre.
