Sean Manaea allows three runs in spring debut, Brett Baty homers in Mets' loss to Marlins

The Mets offense was relatively quiet on Saturday afternoon, managing just four hits in a 4-1 loss to the Miami Marlins.

Here are the takeaways...

- Sean Manaea took the mound for his first start of spring training and got into some trouble in the first inning. The left-hander let up a leadoff single to Luis Arraez and then threw a wild pitch, allowing Arraez to advance to second base. Manaea got a groundout, which advanced the runner to third, and allowed back-to-back RBI doubles to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Avisail Garcia, giving Miami a 2-0 lead.

Manaea then let up two infield singles, as a run crossed to make it a 3-0 game, before getting a flyout and pop-out to end the inning. Overall, the lefty gave up five hits and three runs on 28 pitches in the first.

- The 32-year-old bounced back in the second inning, getting a quick groundout and then striking out Arraez looking on the eighth pitch of the at-bat. After allowing a single to Tim Anderson, Manaea struck out Chisholm to close the frame. Manaea came back out for the third, recording two quick outs, but let up a double to Jon Berti to end his day.

Manaea finished after 56 pitches over 2.2 innings, as he allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

- New York didn't record a hit through 2.1 innings against Eury Perez, but the Marlins starter left the game with trainers in the third and Taylor Kohlwey singled in the first at-bat against new pitcher Lincoln Henzman. The Mets loaded the bases after a fielder's choice and an error, but Pete Alonso struck out and Francisco Alvarez flied out to end the scoring chance.

- Brooks Raley came in to pitch the bottom of the fourth inning, replacing Hunter Parsons who recorded the final out in the third. Raley hit the first batter Nick Fortes, but settled in to record three straight outs, including two strikeouts. Jorge Lopez took the mound in the fifth and tossed a 1-2-3 inning on 10 pitches.

- Prospect Christian Scott walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the sixth and then struck out Trey Mancini looking on a slider. Scott let up a two-out double that made it a 4-0 game and closed the inning on a lineout.

- Brett Baty recorded the Mets' second hit of the day in the top of the seventh, crushing a solo homer to right to cut the Marlins lead to 4-1.

- 23-year-old Mike Vasil came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and allowed a leadoff double to Griffin Conine. Vasil then got a fly out to right field and struck out Jose Devers on a nasty cutter. He closed the inning after 19 pitches by getting a grounder to third for the final out.

Jose Butto pitched the eighth, allowing one hit and striking out two Marlins.

- Alvarez, Francisco Lindor, and Mark Vientos all went 0-for-3 at the plate. Alonso finished the day 0-for-1 with two walks. Jett Williams entered the game late and struck out in his only at-bat. Kohlwey picked up another hit in the eighth, finishing the day 2-for-3. Luisangel Acuna and Drew Gilbert both grounded out in the ninth inning during their only at-bats.
