Our score predictions for Clemson vs. Furman

We are a couple of days away from Dabo Swinney and the Tigers’ second game of the season in their Week 2 matchup at home against Furman.

Walking away from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta last Monday with a win, the 2022 Clemson team had their fair share of positives along with some negatives. While the defense looked just as good as advertised heading into the season, the offense struggled to open the game though they got better throughout the game.

The Tigers head into Week 2 against Furman as the hefty favorite as Swinney should be able to get a lot of his guys playing time in their first home game of the season.

Here at Clemson Wire, the staff broke down their predictions for the Tigers’ matchup with the Paladins. Here’s a look at what we’re thinking.

After a solid but not spectacular 41-10 Week 1 win against Georgia Tech, Clemson should easily handle the Paladins at home. I’m expecting both DJ Uiagalelei and Cade Klubnik to perform at a very high level in the minutes they’re given… as long as the wide receivers come to play. They were underwhelming against Georgia Tech though a home matchup against Furman should be a great bounce-back game for them. The offensive line also needs a good performance this game, as they performed way below expectation, sometimes getting bullied if I’m being honest. I hope Swinney gives Shipley all the opportunities Shipley needs to get going; I’ve seen a lot of people speaking nonsense about him after the Tech game. Obviously, no worries on my end with the defense in this matchup. The Tigers win big as they should.

Though Clemson was able to get the job done versus Georgia Tech with a 31-point victory on Monday, it didn’t come without some areas to improve. The Tigers should have no issue coming away with the win against the Paladins, but the big question lies in Clemson’s offense. I think the Tigers receiving core will come alive in Week 2 following an uncharacteristically quiet game for the position room earlier this week. I expect Clemson to run away with this one early, allowing meaningful game reps for not just starters, but the majority of the Tigers roster on all sides of the ball.

While I thought Clemson’s game against Georgia Tech would foreshadow the Tigers’ 2022 season, I now think Saturday’s matchup with Furman and next week’s matchup with Louisiana Tech will provide much more insight. Playing against far inferior opponents these next two weeks, Clemson’s offense will be under the microscope and will need to perform at a high level, and I think it’ll make promising strides on Saturday. Aided by a strong defensive showing, I’m predicting Uiagalelei and the wide receivers to look much better than last week. I think Clemson ultimately comes out with a 50-point victory.
