San Antonio Reagan, Vandegrift are 1-2 after one round of UIL state golf championship

GEORGETOWN — Vandegrift will have to rally on the second day of the UIL state girls golf championship to defend the state title the Vipers earned last year.

On what proved to be a tough day for most competitors at the Class 6A tournament, San Antonio Reagan claimed the top spot in team standings by firing a first-day score of 6-over par Monday at White Wing Golf Club.

Vandegrift's Sydney Givens, shown during the 2023 state tournament, shot a 1-under par 71 on Monday, the first day of the 2024 UIL state golf tournament for Class 6A. The Vipers are three shots behind San Antonio Reagan in team standings.

Vandegrift, though, is within striking distance after finishing 9-over par, three strokes behind the Rattlers.

While Reagan and Vandegrift appear to be the two main contenders for team honors, several golfers — including a few from Austin-area schools — are in the mix for individual honors.

Vandegrift's Swetha Satish and Reagan's Danielle Bailey are tied at the top of the leaderboard after posting 2-under 70s on a muggy afternoon. Westlake's Isabel Emanuels, Southlake Carroll's Tyler Burtnett and defending state silver medalist Sydney Green of Vandegrift are one stroke behind.

This marks the fourth straight year Vandegrift has been vying for team honors. The Vipers earned silver medals in team standings in 2021 and 2022 before striking gold in 2023.

Among the other Central Texas golfers who competed Monday were Vandegrift's Addison Bandelier (2-over 74) and Westlake's Ava Osborne (76).

Westlake is in sixth place in team standings, 19 shots back.

The tournament will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
