Sam Moll is back in the Reds' bullpen, activated from the injured list

On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds’ bullpen took a big step toward getting back to full strength. The Reds activated reliever Sam Moll, who started the year on the injured list with a left shoulder impingement, before Tuesday’s game.

With Moll back in the bullpen, the Reds have an arsenal of left-handed relievers that the team hasn’t had in a few years. Between Moll, Brent Suter and Justin Wilson, the Reds have three veteran left-handed options in the mix to get important outs.

“I add more depth to the bullpen,” Moll said. “It’s a lot of great arms down there and guys who get the job done. It’s exciting to be back.”

Moll joined the Reds at the trade deadline last August and immediately became one of their best relievers. In 25 appearances with the Reds, he posted a 0.73 ERA.

He doesn’t overpower hitters or generate a lot of swings and misses, but Moll stands out with his ability to force ground balls and weak contact against standout hitters.

Moll had the best stretch of his career with the Reds last summer, and he’s looking to carry that over into 2024.

“Last year means nothing,” Moll said. “While it was great, it’s a new season. I’ll continue to take the next step.”Ian Gibaut, Alex Young and Tejay Antone are the Reds’ relievers still on the injured list. Gibaut is expected to resume a rehab assignment this week, Young could return in late May and Antone is out for the season.

In a corresponding move with Moll’s activation, the Reds optioned reliever Casey Legumina to Triple-A.
