Salisbury University softball advances to Championship round of DIII World Series

The Salisbury University softball team (48-4) is headed to the championship series of the NCAA Division III Softball National Championships, as a comeback victory over Berry on Sunday put them one step closer to the program's first national title.

The top-ranked Sea Gulls defeated the Berry College Vikings twice on Sunday in a double-header to advance to the National Championship Series, and their second win late Sunday was a thrilling comeback in a winner-take-all game.

After defeating Berry 7-2 earlier in the day to force a second game that would decide who would go to the championship series, the Sea Gulls fell behind 4-0 through five innings.

With their season in the balance heading into the final inning, the Sea Gulls responded in a major way, scoring four runs in the seventh to tie the game. After a leadoff single and back to back walks, Carrie Jacoby brought all three baserunners home with a three-run double to cut the deficit to one. Natalie Paoli tied the game with a single with two outs to keep their season alive.

After keeping the Vikings off the board in the eighth, a Lauren Meyers walk-off hit won the game for the Sea Gulls, as the center-fielder for Berry could not make the diving catch.

Salisbury will face Trine in the Division III Championship Series, which starts on June 6. This will be the fourth time the Sea Gulls softball team has played in the Championship, and they will try to bring home their first national title.
