Saints report: First border battle hockey game goes to CSS

Oct. 28—Wisconsin-Superior rallied from 4-0 down to tie the game vs. St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 28, but Brodie Girod's late shorthanded goal gave the Saints an eventual 6-4 victory.

Saturday's men's hockey curtain-raiser for both teams at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth was dominated by the host Saints early. Carsen Richels opened the scoring midway through the first period, and it was 4-0 Saints when Alec Severson scored at 11:08 of the second period.

Dominic Murano scored to begin the UWS comeback, and three Yellowjackets goals in the third period evened it up, with Dusty Bergstrom scoring the equalizer with 6:38 to play.

The visitors appeared poised to take the lead when CSS took a penalty with 4:34 to play, but it was Girod who scored, for the Saints with 3:26 remaining.

CSS took another penalty and scored another shorthanded goal (albeit into an empty net) to complete the scoring.

Jack Bostedt made 30 saves for the Saints. UWS's Jan Skorpik made 14 saves over the first 31 minutes, before reliever Kobe Grant stopped 12 shots.

CSS (1-0) plays at home on Friday vs. Wisconsin-Stout, while the Yellowjackets continue on he road on Friday at Augsburg.

Two St. Scholastica runners finished in the top five individuals at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference cross country meet, held on Saturday in Northfield, Minnesota.

Senior Lars Dewall and junior Calvin Boone finished less than two seconds apart in third and fourth, respectively, with Dewall covering the 8-kilometer distance in 23 minutes, 45.4 seconds, about 22 seconds behind winner Mohammed Bati of Augsburg.

The CSS team finished third in the overall standings behind defending champions St. Olaf and host Carleton.

St. Scholastica senior Allison Hendrickson led the Saints women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at Saturday's MIAC meet in Northfield, Minnesota.

Hendrickson ran a 21:59.7 for 6 kilometers to finish in sixth overall behind champion Fiona Smith of St. Benedict.

The Saints' Regan DeWitt was the best freshman runner and finished 17th overall, while junior Maj Lis Helmer took 20th.

The Saints team finished fourth overall with 119 points behind host Carleton, which easily and successfully defended its title.

No. 18 St. John's showed its quality early and often, scoring five touchdowns in the first quarter and thumping St. Scholastica 62-7 in MIAC football on Saturday in Collegeville, Minnesota.

The Johnnies' first seven offensive drives all ended in Aaron Syverson touchdown passes, two apiece to Alex Larson, Nick VanErp and Marselio Mendez.

The Saints got on the board in a two-minute drill, as Donald West and Ricky Weber made a short 2-yard touchdown connection to get CSS on the board 40 seconds before the half.

West was 19-for-36 for 121 yards and was intercepted twice. Nick Schlender ran for 56 yards on 14 carries to lead the Saints, while Wyatt Lahr caught seven balls for 59 yards.

CSS (2-6, 1-5 MIAC) will try and break a four-game losing streak next Saturday vs. Hamline in Duluth.

Keegan Chastey (Duluth Denfeld) canceled out an early Gustavus Adolphus goal with one of his own, but he and the Saints couldn't respond to the ones the Gusties had after that en route to a 6-1 MIAC win on Saturday in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Chastey scored from an assist by Kyle Schmidt in the 24th minute to make it 1-1, but the Gusties regained their lead with two goals later in the half about four minutes apart and added three more in the second half.

Jared Hecht scored twice for Gustavus, which had a 27-8 advantage in shot attempts and 13-6 in shots on target.

Liam Lothian made seven saves for CSS, which ends its 2023 season 2-14-1, 0-9-1 in the MIAC.

St. Scholastica women's soccer couldn't get any of five shot attempts past Gustavus Adolphus goalkeepers Katelyn Olson and Claire Hemstock in a season-ending 2-0 defeat on Saturday in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Cambelle Waldspurger had a goal and assist for Gustavus, which scored once in each half with a 17-6 advantage in shot attempts and 8-5 in shots on target.

Gracie Meagher (Cloquet-Carlton) made six saves for the Saints.

St. Scholastica finishes 2023 with a 1-15-2 record, 1-7-2 in MIAC play.

St. Scholastica couldn't generate enough offense to swing with St. Olaf on Saturday, getting swept 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16) in a MIAC match at Reif Gym in Duluth.

The Saints had just 20 kills for the day, starting the match with four kills and four errors as a team in the first set.

CSS was strong blocking, recording 10 to the Oles' four. Lindsey Baribeau (Mesabi East) had seven kills and seven blocks to lead her team in both cageories. Grace Myhre also led CSS in two categories: assists (eight) and digs (10).

CSS (3-21, 1-9 MIAC) concludes its season on Friday at Hamline.
