Sadie Thomas is Girls Athlete of Year at NW Pennsylvania High School Sports Awards show.
Sadie Thomas was named the Girls Athlete of the Year at the Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Sports Awards show, presented by AHN Sports Medicine at Saint Vincent.
Thomas edged out the other two finalists, Cathedral Preparatory School's Sarah Clark and General McLane High School's Brooklyn Respecki. Clark was a named the track and field athlete of the year at the show and was also a cross country athlete of the year finalist. A distance specialist, she was a three-time gold medalist during District 10’s meet at Slippery Rock University. Respecki was named the girls soccer player of the year. She finished her high school career at General McLane as one of the most prolific scorers not only in District 10 but in the state. The Edinboro recruit scored 402 points in her career, including 167 goals and 68 assists. She helped lead the Lancers to the PIAA Class 2A girls soccer championship match.
Maplewood's Thomas wrapped up her impressive high school career with a big senior year. Thomas was named all-state, all-district and all-region in girls volleyball and was named the District 10 player of the year in girls volleyball after leading the Tigers to the PIAA Class 1A championship. Thomas followed up a big fall season with another solid basketball season. Thomas was named all-district and all-region after scoring 12.7 points per game. She finished as Maplewood's second-leading scorer in girls basketball with 1,352 career points. Thomas also served as the kicker for the football team with 39 extra points and three field goals.
In all, over 300 student-athletes were honored during the show, which celebrates athletes from the entire Erie area. Twenty-two athletes were honored as Players of the Year in their respective sports and 12 premier awards were handed out, including Boys Athlete of the Year, Girls Athlete of the Year, Boys Team of the Year, Girls Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Courage Award, Groundbreaker Award, Rookie of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Small-School Varsity Cup, Large-School Varsity Cup and School Spirit Award.
The Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards program, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
