Rutgers football has decisively beaten its first two opponents.

Can the Scarlet Knights do that to their third?

Greg Schiano's team will try to improve to 3-0 (it would become 3-0 for the third straight season, something Rutgers hasn't done since 1959-61) when it hosts Virginia Tech today (3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network) at SHI Stadium.

Virginia Tech enters with a 1-1 record after beating Old Dominion in its season-opener and losing to Purdue last week.

Brent Pry's team was hit hard by injuries against the Boilermakers. Wide receiver Ali Jennings is out today, while starting quarterback Grant Wells is questionable.

This could be a good opportunity for Rutgers' defense to continue its stellar start to the season.

FINAL SCORE & TAKEAWAYS: Three reasons Rutgers football beat Virginia Tech to improve to 3-0

FINAL: RUTGERS 35, VIRGINIA TECH 16

It wasn't always pretty, but the Scarlet Knights got the win and are 3-0.

4Q, 10:41: Kyle Monangai scores on a 55-yard run

Rutgers needed that in a big way. It's 28-16 Scarlet Knights.

4Q, 14:18: Virginia Tech makes it a five-point game

Tuten scores on a one-yard run. VT went for two but couldn't convert.

Regardless, the Hokies are back in the game.

3Q, 3:39: First touchdown of the game for Virginia Tech

Kyron Drones hits Da'Quan Felton for a 39-yard touchdown pass. Felton was wide open on the play and cruised into the end zone.

The Hokies cut Rutgers' lead to 21-10.

HALFTIME: Rutgers 21, Virginia Tech 3

Christian Dremel hauled in a four-yard touchdown pass from Wimsatt. Dremel just barely stayed inside the right pylon for the score. The ref initially said he stepped out of bounds, but it was overturned after a review.

Rutgers caught another break on the previous play when VT got called for pass interference on a Wimsatt pass into the end zone, giving the Scarlet Knights first-and-goal from the 4.

It wasn't a pretty first half, but the Scarlet Knights did what they had to do. Wimsatt had some good runs, and the defense is keeping the Hokies in check.

2Q, 7:50: Gavin Wimsatt adds to Rutgers' lead

Rutgers caught another break on that drive as Virginia Tech got called for roughing the passer on the first play, giving Rutgers first-and-10 at its own 40.

Wimsatt hit Christian Dremel with a nice pass down the left sideline (Dremel also did a nice job of securing the catch with a defender on him) for a 23-yard gain.

Three plays later, Wimsatt ran it in from 34 yards out for a touchdown, his second rushing touchdown of the season.

14-3 Rutgers.

2Q, 9:32: Virginia Tech on the board

This time, John Love makes a 30-yard field goal to give the Hokies their first points of the game.

It's 7-3 Rutgers.

1Q, 6:28: Virginia Tech misses a FG

The Hokies had a chance to get on the board, but John Love missed a 36-yard field goal wide left.

Virginia Tech started the drive at its own 47 following a Rutgers three-and-out. The Hokies went for it on fourth-and-8 from the Rutgers 36 and Kyron Drones hit Stephen Gosnell for a 10-yard pass to convert.

But the Hokies ultimately came away with nothing.

1Q, 14:17: Rutgers football catches an early break, capitalizes

Well, that was fast.

Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones fumbled at the Hokies' 19 on the second play from scrimmage and Wesley Bailey recovered for Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights immediately took advantage as running back Kyle Monangai found a hole on the left side and ran it in from the 19 for a touchdown.

Rutgers is up 7-0 early.

Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech availability Report

The following players are OUT for the Scarlet Knights today:

WR Chris Long

WR Naseim Brantley

WR Jessie Ofurie

LB Dariel Djabome

OL Tyler Needham

No one is questionable.

Needham suffered an injury last week against Temple, so his addition to the report wasn't surprising. Kamar Missouri will likely start in his place at right tackle.
