Rutgers fall athletics prepares for Big Ten Tournament play

With the fall athletics season winding down, various Rutgers athletics are preparing for the start of postseason play. That list includes men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and field hockey. Rutgers football and volleyball still have a few weeks to prepare for the Big Ten tournament.

Over the last few months, Rutgers fans have had plenty to celebrate. Rutgers field hockey nearly shocked the world and finished 17-0 before dropping their final two games of the season. However, for a program that struggled last year, the future is bright.

Additionally, Rutgers football has been a pleasant surprise this year. With four games left, they have already won six games and positioned themselves to earn a bid for a bowl game.

Now, the fun begins with a Big Ten title on the line for the majority of Rutgers athletics.

Men's Soccer

Record: 5-6-3

After a slow start to the season, the Scarlet Knights have looked a lot better of late. In their last three games, Rutgers has recorded two wins and one tie. Jackson Temple and Matthew Acosta have led the way offensively with four combined goals. The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Sunday against Indiana.

Women's Soccer

Record: 9-6-3

For Rutgers women’s soccer, a successful regular season ended with a two-game winning streak. In the regular season finale, Sara Brocious and Ashley Baran did all the scoring, while Olivia Bodmer made three saves. The Scarlet Knights focus will shift to the Big Ten tournament and their matchup with Wisconsin on Sunday.

Football

Record: 6-2, (3-2)

Last Saturday, the Scarlet Knights secured their third win against a Big Ten team this season in Indiana. While Rutgers was unable to get anything going in the passing game, they recorded 301 yards on the ground. Gavin Wimsatt led the way with 149 yards and three touchdowns. With four games left in the regular season, Rutgers has already matched its highest win total in ten years.

Field Hockey

Record: 15-2

Although Rutgers field hockey ended the regular season with a two-game losing streak, they were still one of the best programs in the country. They suffered a drastic turnaround from one year ago by recording double-digit wins. The Scarlet Knights will be looking to recapture their dominant form when the Big Ten tournament begins on November 2.

Volleyball

Record: 9-11

For Rutgers volleyball, the 2023 campaign has been full of ups and downs. The Scarlet Knights have lost four straight matches to fall two games under .500. They have a chance to get back in the win column on Friday against Iowa.
