Roundup: Zane Trace and Southeastern fall in baseball district semifinals

Wheelersburg 3, Zane Trace 1: The Pioneers came close to a district finals appearance, but they were stopped short by the Pirates at VA Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.

Josh Young got the start on the mound, and he pitched four innings while striking out three batters and giving up three earned runs on eight hits. Dillon Hoover closed out the final two innings on the mound, and he didn't allow a hit in that span. Young also tallied three hits at the plate, while Ezra Rippeth and Rece Allen both added on a single.

Ironton 8, Southeastern 3: The Panthers picked up an early lead in the Division III district finals before falling to the Tigers at VA Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night. They'd assumed an early lead after tacking on two runs, but the Tigers responded with three unearned runs to steal the lead away.

Tyler Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Joey Pfeifer hit a double and picked up a walk. Gage Cheadle tallied a hit, a run and two stolen bases, and Hudson Drake put up a hit, a run and a stolen base. Travis Chenault added a hit and an RBI, and Carson McWhorter went 1-for-3. Drew Leach collected a hit and a run, as well.

Pfeifer also pitched two and two-thirds innings for the Panthers, during which he gave up two hits and three runs while striking out a pair.
