ROUNDUP: Shenango baseball team upends Laurel

Apr. 27—Grason Hooks paced the Shenango High baseball team to a victory Friday afternoon.

Hooks was 5 for 5 at the plate in leading the Wildcats to a 14-8 WPIAL nonsection road win over Laurel.

Shenango (7-6) pounded out 16 hits in the win. The Spartans (7-7) contributed nine hits to the offensive explosion.

Hooks drove in two runs as well for the Wildcats. Trey Ross registered three hits, while Jason Malley, Joe Campoli and Christian Anterock added two apiece.

Anterock drove in four runs and Ross was next with three. Malley plated a pair.

Luca Santini, Kolton Carlson and William Zwolenik posted two hits each to lead Laurel.

Santini and Zwolenik knocked in two runs apiece for the Spartans.

Ben Santangelo started and earned the win. Santangelo tossed three innings, giving up four hits and three runs — all earned — with a walk and four strikeouts.

Santini started and took the loss. He hurled three frames, giving up seven hits and four runs — three earned — with a walk and seven strikeouts.

The teams combined to make 11 errors, six of which by Laurel.

Shenango scored a run in the second, three in the third, six in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Laurel plated three tallies in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh.

The Wildcats host Mohawk at 4 p.m. Monday, while the Spartans visit Freedom at 4 p.m.

MOHAWK 8,

CENTRAL VALLEY 3

Mohawk took control with a four-run fourth frame in a nonsection road win over Central Valley in a battle of the Warriors.

The game was tied at 2 when Mohawk broke it open in the fourth.

Mohawk (13-1) registered 12 hits, led by Bobby Fadden with three.

A.J. Verdi and Mason Hopper contributed two hits each for the Warriors.

Cash Stratton secured the win. Stratton started and pitched three innings, allowing one hit and two runs — both unearned — with five walks and two strikeouts.

Mohawk scored two runs in the first, four in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Central Valley (8-6) tallied solo runs in the first, second and seventh innings.

Mohawk travels to Shenango at 4 p.m. Monday.

Wilmington 13,

Conneaut 3

The Greyhounds rolled to a District 10, nonregion road win over Conneaut.

The game was stopped after six innings because of the mercy rule.

Wilmington (8-4) registered 13 total hits, led by Brodie Dewberry with four, including a three-run homer. He knocked in five runs as well.

Ben Miller chipped in three hits for the winners and Freddie Zehetner was next with two.

Chase Mitcheltree tallied two RBIs.

Shane Heller (3-0) tossed a complete game to capture the win. Heller allowed nine hits and three runs — two earned — with a walk and two strikeouts.

Wilmington scored a run in the first, one in the second, one in the third, five in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Conneaut collected three tallies in the fourth frame.

Wilmington returns to the diamond at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sharpsville to complete a suspended game from Wednesday. The game was suspended because of darkness in the top of the ninth with the score tied at 4. The Greyhounds visit Mercer at 4:15 p.m. Monday.

Softball

Laurel 16-15,

Aliquippa 0-0

The Lady Spartans made quick work of the Lady Quips in a home doubleheader sweep in Section 1-2A action.

Both games were stopped after three innings because of the mercy rule.

Laurel recorded 10 hits in the opener, including two each by Ivy Pancher, Autumn Boyd and Riley Balcom.

Mayci Lang and Lexi Krol knocked in three runs each for the winners, while Pancher, Addie Deal, Boyd and Balcom added two apiece.

Deal and Pancher both had a triple.

Balcom pitched all three innings to claim the win. She gave up no hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

Laurel scored 10 runs in the first and six more in the second.

The Lady Spartans (8-2 section, 10-4 overall) supplied 12 hits in the nightcap to capture the sweep.

Contessa Cotelesse, Mayci Lang and Autumn notched two hits each for Laurel. Cotelesse collected a triple.

Lang tossed all three innings to pick up the victory. She gave up no hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Laurel scored nine runs in the first and six in the second.

The Lady Spartans visit Mercer at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Neshannock 10,

Shenango 0

Addy Frye recorded three hits and four RBIs to propel the Lady Lancers to a Section 1-2A home win over the Lady Wildcats.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Neshannock (10-0, 13-0) posted 10 total hits. Jaidon Nogay contributed two hits for the victors, including a solo home run.

Abigale Measel knocked in two runs.

Measel (5-0) went the distance to pick up the win. She gave up three hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.

The Lady Lancers have allowed just three runs all season and own 11 shutouts.

Shenango (7-3, 7-6) supplied three hits.

Kennedi Lynn started and took the loss. Lynn tossed 2 1/3 innings, surrendering eight hits and eight runs — three earned — with no walks and two strikeouts.

Neshannock notched four runs in the first, one in the second and five in the third.

The Lady Lancers return to action at 4 p.m. Monday at Riverside. Shenango entertains Laurel at 4 p.m. Monday.

Boys track

Mohawk, Shenango teams win titles

Mohawk's seventh-grade track and field team placed first in the junior high Tri-County championship meet with a score of 168. Laurel took second with 74 points, while Ellwood City took bronze with a score of 71.

Shenango's eighth-grade track and field team took first in the championship with a score of 164. Laurel won silver with a score of 133 and Neshannock took third with a score of 66.

In the seventh-grade meet, Mohawk's Lucas Stratton set a record in the shot put event at 40-4. In the eighth-grade meet, Shenango's Chad Christopher set records in the javelin (150-10) and discus (145-8) event, while Union's Swayzee Reighert (47-9.5) set a record for shot put.
