ROUNDUP: Parke Heritage girls get 19th win at Fountain Central
Jan. 19—Emma Simpson's 20-point, seven-rebound, five-assist performance led Parke Heritage to a 58-37 high school girls basketball victory over Fountain Central on Wednesday in the Mustangs' gym.
The Wolves, now 19-3 overall and 6-0 in the Wabash River Conference, dropped Fountain Central's records to 16-4 and 4-1 WRC.
Simpson shot 7 for 12 from the field and 6 for 6 on free throws while also posting two steals.
Addison Jenkins added 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Andi Perkins had 11 points and Addilee Jenkins had seven rebounds, three assists and four.
The Wolves play their last regular-season game Tuesday, hosting Attica on Senior Night.

Paris 45, Olney 17 — At Lawrenceville, Ill., Graci Watson scored nine points and teammates Kilee Edwards and Taylor Clark added eight each to lead the Tigers to a Little Illini Conference Tournament win Wednesday evening.
Watson, Edwards and Clark each hit two 3-pointers for Paris, which took control early with a 17-4 first-quarter lead.
The Tigers climb to 15-9 overall.
—Linton 63, Bloomfield 23 — At Linton, Sydney Jerrells scored 25 points and Bradie Chambers chipped in 23 as the host Miners rolled to a win Wednesday night.
Linton blew the game open with 26 second-quarter points, leading 42-12 at halftime.
—North Vermillion 46, Covington 32 — At Cayuga, Cadence Dunham scored 17 points and teammates Braxtyn Dunham and Kera Dunham added 12 each on Wednesday night, as the host Falcons climbed to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in the Wabash River Conference.

Women's basketball
—Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 79, West Virginia Tech 64 — The Pomeroys' Brooklynn Jones scored all 22 of her points in the second half as The Woods bounced back from an underwhelming first half to win Thursday.
The Pomeroys had a subpar shooting night overall, making just 37 percent from the field. But SMWC forced 21 turnovers and turned those into 26 points.
SMWC (10-7, 5-2 River States Conference) won its second straight game. Madison Fueger added 18 points, seven rebounds and became third Pomeroy this season to post six steals in a game.
The Pomeroys closed the third quarter's final 2 minutes, 25 seconds with a 12-4 run to take control of a tight game throughout.
Jones had seven of those 12, connecting on an open 3-pointer and Aubrey Burgess, who chipped in nine points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench, drilled a 3-pointer with three seconds left in the period, putting the Pomeroys ahead 59-51 going into the final quarter.
Jones capped a 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter with another 3-pointer and SMWC's lead grew as large as 19 points.
The Pomeroys outrebounded the Golden Bears 48-29. Allyson Hardiek chipped in seven boards to go with two blocked shots.
College track
—ISU's O'Bannon, Staggs tops in MVC for week — Indiana State track and field picked up a pair of conference honors after winning the Coughlan-Mallloy Cup for the first time since 2017, as Terrance O'Bannon was named the MVC Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Will Staggs was selected as the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week Thursday.
This week's awards mark the second straight sweep of the men's weekly conference honors for Indiana State, with O'Bannon and Staggs also earning the weekly awards following the Trees' season-opening meet.
O'Bannon picked up right where he left off at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup, setting meet and facility records in the 60 meters for the second straight meet. The sophomore sprinter ran the second-fastest time in the field in prelims at 6.75, then bettered that in the finals with a season-best time of 6.66 to break the Coughlan-Malloy Cup and Indiana State Indoor Track and Field Facility records in the event. In addition, he also ran a career-best 200-meter time of 22.33 to place fourth in the event.
O'Bannon ranks second in program history in the 60m, with last week's season-best time ranking first in both the MVC and the Great Lakes region, and 18th nationally. He also ranks seventh in the MVC and 14th in the Great Lakes region in the 200.
Staggs continued his winning ways at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup, setting the meet record in the pole vault for a second consecutive season on his way to another first-place finish. The 2023 Honorable Mention All-American and Indiana State indoor pole-vault record holder cleared a season-best 17 feet, 6.5 inches to take home top spot, with his mark also being among the top 10 pole vault marks across the country this week. Prior to clearing 5.35 meters, he also cleared marks of 16-2.5 and 16-8.25 at the meet.
Staggs ranks first in the pole vault in both the MVC and the Great Lakes region, with his mark also ranking 10th nationally.
The weekly awards give Indiana State a conference-leading six this season after the Sycamores swept all four MVC weekly honors following their season-opening meet. It is O'Bannon's second career weekly honor and Staggs' third career weekly honor.
Indiana State returns to action with the Indiana Invitational at Bloomington, which was slated to run Friday and Saturday.
