Roundup: Host Granville faces stiff competition in Steve Stahl Memorial

Andy Sanchez won his first three matches by pin Saturday for the Granville wrestling team before taking runner-up in the Gold Pool of the 138-pound class during the Blue Aces' Steve Stahl Memorial.

Sanchez fell in the final to Circleville's Jacob Johnson. Griffin Dunbar (106), Peyton Costa (120), Nick Sanchez (165) and Ian Rutherford (Hwt.) all took third in the Gold Pool in a field of consisting of mostly Division I schools.

Nic Ramirez (144) won all four of his matches to win the Silver Pool for the Blue Aces.

Watkins takes runner-up

Scott Speakman finished 4-0 to win the 165-pound title for Watkins Memorial during the Jimmy Mac Invitational at Bellefontaine.

Speakman pinned his first three opponents before beating Allen East’s Trenten Gatchell 7-1 in the final, helping the Warriors take runner-up in team standings, totaling 269 points, trailing Allen East’s 320.5.

Nolan Perry (113), Anthony Roland (120), Caden Ball (150) and Brayden Cassin (175) each placed second for the Warriors, and Zander Phillips (157), Chase Kellett (190) and Chris Flowers (Hwt.) each took third.

Douglas leads Valley

Aiden Douglas won all five of his matches in his high school debut, winning the 106-pound title for Licking Valley in the Cambridge Invitational.

Douglas beat Beaver Local’s Justice Fisher 3-0 in the final. He finished with two pins and a technical fall.

Gunnar Hickman (157) took runner-up, and Aiden McMahan (113) and Luke Conaway (144) each took third.

Carnahan wins

Brady Carnahan finished 4-1 with three pins to win the 113-pound title for Heath in the Waterford Invitational.

Reece Shriner took runner-up (215), and Angus Jaydan (120) and Jaydin Helmondollar (175) each took third.

Luft takes second

Brian Luft pinned his first three opponents before taking runner-up in the 138-pound class for Newark Catholic in the Lee Spitzer Golden Bear Invitational at Upper Arlington.

Max Childers took fourth (126).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Watkins outlasts Northridge

Lamar Glenn scored 6 of his 12 points in overtime to lift Watkins Memorial to a 50-42 victory against visiting Northridge in the Licking County League opener.

Jude Wise scored 13 points to lead the Warriors (2-1, 1-0), who led 36-22 after three quarters before the Vikings (1-1, 0-1) came storming back. Cole Massie added 12 points and Hunter Wagner 9.

Carter Mallernee racked up 30 points to lead the Vikings. Drew Bingham added 7 points.

Heights cruises

Alieu Ceesay scored 8 of his team-high 15 points in the first quarter, sending Licking Heights off to a fast start in a 59-28 victory against visiting Lakewood in LCL play.

Kaleb Russ added 8 points and Ezra Bobo 7 for the Hornets (3-0, 1-0), who had 10 players score.

Colton Ferry’s 6 points led the Lancers (1-1, 0-1).

Utica falls on road

Host Zanesville (1-0, 1-0) hit 12 3-pointers, sending Utica to an 81-40 defeat in LCL play.

Roman Gamble led Utica (0-2, 0-1) with 16 points. Logan Gosnell added 10 points, hitting a pair of 3s.

GCA slowed on road

Granville Christian was held to 20 points during the final three quarters in a 50-37 loss at Shekinah Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Bentley Johnson totaled 17 points for the Lions (3-1, 1-1), who led 17-3 after one quarter before the Flames rallied. Thad Hartshorn added 11 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GCA drops road game

Host Shekinah Christian made five 3-pointers in the third quarter, dropping Granville Christian to a 45-28 defeat in MOCAL play.

Isabel Hamilton led the Lions (1-2, 0-2) with 10 points. Skyler Weekley added 6 points.

SWIMMING

Watkins girls wear crown

The Watkins Memorial girls won three events to take the team championship during the Holiday Relays at the Muskingum County YMCA.

Ava Dutton, Olivia Crock, Gabby Culver and Annie Edward won the 200 medley relay (2:05.38) for the Warriors, who totaled 94 points, 14 ahead of host Tri-Valley. Dutton, Sophia Lochard, Gracie Allen and Allie Downs won the 400 medley relay (5:08.36), and Lochard, Allen, Downs and Molly Windnagel won the 200 backstroke relay (2:37.81).

Newark’s foursome of Addison Cain, Maryn Hatfield, Turin Hatfield and Jaden Moisey won the mixed 200 butterfly relay (2:01.71).

For the Watkins boys, Caden May, Cain May, Wes Arnholt and Ryan Stought won the 200 medley relay (1:50.31). Stought, Cain May, Micah Jenkins and Dylan Boals won the mixed 200 package relay (2:15.35), and Arnholt and Caden May combined with Dutton and Crock from the girls team to win the mixed 200 free relay (1:43.28).

Lancer pair win races

Kara Weekly won the 100 butterfly (1:41.33) and Scarlett Yugovich the 100 freestyle (1:09.73) to lead Lakewood during the River View Invitational at Coshocton.

Weekly added a third in the 100 breaststroke (1:36.72), and Yugovich matched her in the 50 free (30.31). Weekly, Yugovich, Allie Hanson and Khloe Antunes also placed fourth in the 200 free relay (2:31.12).

In the boys meet, Evan Gardner placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:50.05) for the Lancers.

BOWLING

Utica boys win

Devin Spring rolled games of 229 and 233 at Sunrise Lanes on Thursday to help the Utica boys total 2,214 in a victory against Maysville’s 1,920 and Tri-Valley’s 1,899.

Landon Pasquali added games of 183 and 229, Michael Spring 214 and 175 and Bryce Hollenback 171 and 184 for Utica.

Kaitlyn Yuhauz’s high game of 154 helped the Utica girls total 1,110, trailing Tri-Valley’s 1,384 and Maysville’s 1,335. Kyleigh Taylor added a high game of 108 and Bella Webb 102 for Utica.
