Roundup: Granville boys tennis wins Licking County Tournament title

The Granville boys tennis team won three of five courts Saturday to edge host Watkins Memorial and win the Licking County Tournament.

Purin Songrug at No. 2 and Alex Organ at No. 3 won singles titles, and Kevin Wu and Ben Prokop won at No. 2 doubles for the Blue Aces, who totaled 13 points, one ahead of Watkins’ 12.

Liam Grennan at No. 1 singles and Graham Smith and Nathan Walter at No. 1 doubles won titles for the Warriors.

Runner-up finishers were Granville’s Sam Pfau at No. 1 singles and Jacob Lucas-Miller and Eli Davidoff at No. 1 doubles and Watkins’ Michael Hare at No. 2 singles, Wyatt Meade at No. 3 singles and Gavin Adelman and Will Stought at No. 2 doubles.

BASEBALL

Utica slips past Granville

Back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Roman Gamble and Aidyn Burgess in the top of the 10th inning, lifted Utica to a 5-3 victory at Granville in a continuation of a suspended Licking County League game.

Gamble and Burgess led Utica (6-7, 4-4) with two hits apiece. Isaak Wogan added a hit, a run and an RBI, and Jarrett Hill and Tyler Collura had a hit and a run apiece. Chase Bennett struck out nine and allowed just five hits and one earned run in 10 innings.

Jacob Smith doubled and singled and scored two runs to lead the Blue Aces (6-5, 3-3). Cash Thomas added a hit and two RBIs. Cy Sims recorded an RBI. Luke Bosse struck out two and allowed no earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, and Chase Holtzapple struck out five and allowed no earned runs in four innings, both in relief.

Watkins nips Lakewood

Cole Massie doubled and scored on a hit by pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Watkins Memorial a 2-1 victory against visiting Lakewood in a continuation of a suspended LCL game.

Massie and Aydan Guthrie led the Warriors (10-4, 7-1) with two hits apiece. A.J. Langwasser added a hit and a run and Brayden Windnagel and Braiden Bates an RBI apiece. Windnagel struck out 11 in a two-hitter.

William Marrero doubled and scored for the Lancers (10-3, 6-2). Peyton Tichenor added a hit and Mason Sprankle an RBI. Sprankle also struck out six.

Valley wins at home

Hayden Rodgers, Gunner Bowman and Charlie Facemire combined to strike out 10 in a one-hitter, pitching Licking Valley to a 3-1 victory against visiting New Lexington.

Hayden Rodgers also doubled and singled and drove in two runs for the Panthers (10-1). Brody Rodgers doubled and scored, Zane Hancock singled and scored and Carter Sopher added two hits.

Heath rolls

Hayden Woodward was a perfect 6 for 6, including a home run and a double, and racked up seven RBIs for Heath in a 24-3 victory against visiting John Glenn.

Preston DeVito added five hits, five runs and three RBIs. Riley Baum contributed four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Jaiden Dansby and Paul Gould each had a home run for the Bulldogs (11-1). Carter Mason struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief.

NC edged by Watterson

Miller Hutchison’s two hits, including a double, and a run led Newark Catholic in a 4-2 loss to Bishop Watterson at Beavers Field.

Bryan McAnally and Owen Przymierski added a hit and an RBI apiece for the Green Wave (6-6). Hutchison, Mikey Hess and Przymierski combined for six strikeouts and allowed seven hits for NC, and Jake Uhlenhake struck out two in four three-hit innings for Watterson (9-1), the state’s top-ranked team in Division II.

Heights falls twice

Licking Heights was defeated 4-3 in 10 innings, followed by a 13-3 loss at Sheridan.

Blake Caldwell struck out four and allowed three runs in seven innings in the first game, and Carson Johnson struck out four in 2 1/3 innings of relief for the Hornets (3-10). Johnson also had two hits, including a double, and a run. Timo Martin added two hits and an RBI. Richard Hill had a double and an RBI, and Joel Busker chipped in a hit and an RBI.

Liberty drops pair

Liberty Christian fell 11-0 and 13-4 to visiting Danville.

Evan Dupler doubled and singled and drove in two runs in the second game for the Eagles (3-5). Dawson Kamppi added two hits and an RBI. Caleb Windle and Jackson Cecil had a hit and a run apiece.

Johnstown drops road game

Anthony Zrille totaled two hits, a run and two RBIs for Johnstown in a 15-11 loss at Lexington.

Sevi Chiddention added a hit and three runs, Nash Andrix three runs and three RBIs, Braeden Archibald two hits and three RBIs and Carter Holbrook a hit and two RBIs for the Johnnies (3-7). Jacob Myers allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Northridge falls

David Carr and Riley Reeves each singled for Northridge (1-15) during a 14-0 loss to Centerburg at Don Edwards Park.

SOFTBALL

Watkins wins twice

Watkins Memorial beat top-ranked Lancaster 4-1 in a battle of the state’s top two teams in Division I and also beat No. 8 Centerville 6-1.

Cortney Dobbs’ two-run home run capped a four-run fifth inning in the first game. Jordyn Wycuff added two hits, a run and an RBI. Alli Langwasser had a double, a run and an RBI. Kylie Trouten added a hit and a run for the host Warriors (16-0). Carsyn Cassady struck out 14 without a walk in a five-hitter.

Wycuff homered twice and drove in five runs in the second game, and Langwasser added two hits and two runs. Trouten and Kendal Tellings recorded a hit and a run apiece. Cassady struck out 12 against just two walks in a three-hitter.

Heights blanks Heath

Lydia Rauch piled up three hits, two runs and four RBIs, powering Licking Heights to a 10-0 victory against visiting Heath in a continuation of a suspended game in LCL play.

Rauch also struck out one in a six-inning two-hit shutout. Alissa West added a double and three runs. Lily Meidl had a hit, two runs and an RBI. Ava Von Bargen contributed a hit, a run and an RBI. Chesney McPeck had a hit and a run for the Hornets (6-6, 3-4).

Hannah Cash tripled and Savannah Lawson doubled for the Bulldogs (9-7, 4-4).

Valley wins twice

Licking Valley swept host Pickerington Central 11-8 and 12-8.

Taylor Penick homered twice and drove in four runs in the first game, and D’Neya Dennis added four hits and three runs. Tori Baughman contributed three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Abbe McNabb and Liz Korns added two hits and an RBI apiece for the Panthers (9-5). McNabb struck out eight and allowed one earned run in five innings.

Baughman was a perfect 5 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs in the second game. Chloe Cooperider added two hits, a run and three RBIs; Korns three hits and two runs; McNabb three hits and an RBI; and Dennis two hits and two RBIs.

Utica splits

Utica edged host North Union 7-6 in eight innings before falling 5-4.

Lauren Schmitt was a perfect 5 for 5 with three runs in the first game. Cheyenne Smith added three hits and three RBIs, Makenna Wilson two hits and two RBIs, Lexi Wiegand two hits and an RBI and Hannah Shaver two hits and two runs for Utica (5-6). Carlie Hill struck out two in eight innings.

Smith struck out three and allowed three hits and one unearned run in 4 2/3 innings of relief in the second game. Shaver recorded two hits and an RBI. Wiegand had two hits and a run. Karleigh Lees added a hit and two RBIs.

Johnstown wins one

Johnstown beat Poland Seminary 7-5 before falling 10-8 to Strasburg at Ontario.

Addy Zak totaled three hits, including a home run and double, two runs and three RBIs in the victory. Aubrey Del Cecato added three hits and two runs. Riley Stefanick had a home run and two RBIs. Brooklynne Siegel contributed a hit, a run and an RBI for the Johnnies (4-10). Ava Peterman struck out three and allowed two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, and Stefanick allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Siegel totaled two hits, two runs and an RBI in the loss. Zak added a hit, a run and two RBIs. Madison Holbrook had a hit, a run and an RBI.

TRACK

Valley takes second

Trevor Croak was a double winner in the shot put (50-feet-3.5) and discus (154-2), leading the Licking Valley boys to a runner-up team finish in New Philadelphia’s Leo Gundy Invitational.

Quinn Hornfeck won the 300 hurdles (42.73) and Cooper Hornfeck the pole vault (13-0) for the Panthers, who totaled 94 points, finishing only behind the host Quakers’ 168.

Taking runner-up for Valley were Marshall Carr in the 200 (23.54); Carr, Cooper Hornfeck, Quinn Hornfeck and Lincoln Clements in the 800 relay (1:35.10); Carr, Cooper Hornfeck, Quinn Hornfeck and Anthony Blizzard in the 1,600 relay (3:31.54); and Blizzard, Matthew Fehrman, Logan Debo and Sam Cooperrider in the 3,200 relay (8:30.14).

In the girls meet, Valley’s Rylee Hillis, Joesy Kramer, Bella Reynard and Allyson Conaway took runner-up in the 400 relay (55.09) and third in the 800 relay (1:55.03). Conaway in the pole vault (8-6) and Peyton Robey in the discus (99-4) also each placed third.

Northridge girls win three

A trio of Northridge girls won events during Hamilton Township’s Elmo Kallner Invitational.

Isabel Evans won the 100 hurdles (15.23), Ava Travis the 400 (1:01.64) and Sarah Koker the 800 (2:30.52).

Travis, Koker, Olivia Bird and Courtney BeVier took runner-up in the 1,600 relay (4:24.72). Koker, BeVier, Cheyann Severance and Annabeth Hilton placed third in the 3,200 relay (10:43.84).

Emma Ray in the pole vault (8-feet-6) and Kyren Shumate in the long jump (15-6) each placed fourth for Newark.

In the boys meet, Northridge’s Bodhi Foster won the pole vault (13-0), and Newark’s Ayden Bidwell won the discus (141-5).

Northridge’s Jack Van Fossen added a third in the 400 (52.52). Taking fourth for the Vikings were Van Fossen, Logan Knerr, Braden Yutzy and Benjamin Hilton in the 3,200 relay (8:53.39); Nathan Burkey in the 110 hurdles (16.21); and Xavier Fiamingo in shot put (46-7).

Sean Brechbill in the 400 (52.53) and Ethan Stare in the 800 (2:02.66) each placed fourth for Newark.

Johnstown girls excel

The Johnstown girls won four events during the Bloom-Carroll Invitational.

Winners were Reece Savage in the 400 (1:01.14), Audrey McCrady in the 800 (2:28.18), Alexis Diehl in the discus (111-feet-10.5) and Kate Ruffle in the long jump (15-2.5).

Runner-up finishers were Savage in the 1,600 (5:13.36), McCrady, Allison Bonito, Maren Boston and Giada Nieves in the 3,200 relay (10:53.74), Diehl in the shot put (33-11.5) and Sydney Bruning in the discus (105-3).

In the boys meet, Johnstown’s Alan Villa won the shot put (46-7.25), Josiah Rose the discus (137-3) and Brendan Ball, Aidan Howard, Collin Willard and Cameron Beverick the 3,200 relay (8:33.93). Runner-up finishers were Keaton Curnutte in the 200 (23.71), Beverick in the 800 (2:02.61) and Howard in the 1,600 (4:50.29).
