Robstown, Veterans Memorial athletes claim gold at TAAF Games of Texas

Robstown junior Hailey Martinez captured gold at this week's TAAF Games of Texas track & field meet in Brownsville.

Martinez won the 16U girls discus with a top mark of 114-feet, 11-inches, beating out second-place finisher Azaryah Jackson by five inches.

The Cotton Pickers junior is a two-time regional qualifier in the event and was third in Region IV-4A competition this season.

Veterans Memorial sophomore Brody Garcia will also return home with hardware after winning the 16U boys high jump at the event. Garcia cleared 6-foot-2 to top the competition.

Both athletes were named first-team All-South Texas in 2023.

Daniel Flores, who will be a freshman this fall at Carroll, won the boys 14U 800-meter dash and finished fourth in the 400.

Logann Wood, who will be an eighth grader at Rockport-Fulton Middle School, won the girls 14U 100-meter hurdles and finished third in the 300 hurdles. Lauren Maiden, who will be a freshman at Gregory-Portland, finished second in the girls 14U 100 hurdles.

Martinez medals at national event

Sinton graduate Zerah Martinez competed at the 2023 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in Eugene, Oregon, earning two medals.

Martinez, who will run at Sam Houston State this season, finished third in the 3,000-meter run and also seventh in the 1,500-meter run.
