Richland 200: 100 Richland County honorable mentions deserve a shoutout
MANSFIELD — For the fourth year, the Richland 200 series returns to the Mansfield News Journal.
With this being my project, I wanted to take some time to give some insight into how the athletes are selected as well as who ends up on the final list.
Athletes qualify for the list. If they earn postseason honors in team sports like football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball, they qualify. For more individual-based sports like cross country, golf, tennis, swimming, bowling, wrestling and track, I use my best judgment in picking the athletes who qualify for the list.
This year, we had 280 athletes in Richland County alone qualify for the Richland 200. After adding 20 wildcards (an athlete who didn't earn a postseason honor, but is likely to have a big year) we ended up with 300 total athletes. I can't even begin to tell you how incredible it is to have 300 athletes who are in for a huge 2023-24 season. And every single one of them deserves a spotlight.
So, after careful consideration and an attempt to make sure every sport was represented in the Top 200, I have come up with my 100 honorable mentions. Here they are in no particular order.
