The father of NBA veteran Richard Jefferson was shot and killed on Wednesday night in a drive-by shooting in Compton, California.

According to TMZ, Richard Jefferson Sr. was standing in front of a liquor store on Wednesday evening when a vehicle rolled up and someone inside the car opened fire. Jefferson Sr. was standing with two other men at the time, and it is unclear if he was the intended target.

Jefferson Sr. was then transported to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead later that night, according to ESPN. He was 65.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the shooting.

Jefferson — who was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Glendale, Arizona, with his mother — was drafted No. 13 overall in the 2001 NBA draft. The 38-year-old has played with eight different teams in his 17-year NBA career, and was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 NBA Championship team. He played in just 20 games last season for the Denver Nuggets, averaging 1.5 points in just more than eight minutes per contest.

He is currently a free agent.
