Rhode Island basketball gets another commitment. See who will join in the 2024-25 season.

Monday brought the second commitment of the summer for the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team.

Baltimore small forward Tyonne Farrell announced his pledge to the Rams via Instagram. He’s a Class of 2024 prospect who plays in the rugged Baltimore Catholic League with Mount Saint Joseph and runs on the Nike grassroots circuit with Team Melo.

Farrell also claimed offers from DePaul, Towson, UMBC and more. URI has been a persistent suitor in recent weeks, with assistant coach Kenny Johnson serving as its lead recruiter. The Rams welcomed Farrell to Kingston for an official visit in late June.

Farrell has enjoyed a strong last few months on the floor. He was named to the All-Breakout team in the EYBL at the close of its regular season. Farrell averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 rebounds to help Team Melo — sponsored by NBA veteran, former Syracuse great and fellow city native Carmelo Anthony — reach the Peach Jam this month.

Farrell also starred with the Gaels at DMV Live, a showcase event that matches up high school powers from across the region surrounding the nation’s capital. He averaged 20.3 points against the strong field, including a 30-point outburst and a double-double in which he collected 28 points and 12 rebounds. Farrell put his versatility on display, scoring at will and using his 6-foot-6 frame to impact games across multiple statistical categories.

Farrell figures to compete for wing minutes that could be split by three players in 2023-24. Brandon Weston returns for a second year at URI after his transfer from Seton Hall. Bradley transfer Zek Montgomery and Louisiana Tech transfer David Green both expect to debut for the Rams this season.

URI started its next class last month with Virginia point guard Ben Hammond. He helped lead Team Takeover to a Peach Jam championship, averaging 8.4 points and 5.0 assists through eight games in South Carolina. Hammond collected 40 assists against just 16 turnovers and shot an even 54.0% from the field, as his club downed Mokan Elite in the semifinals and Vegas Elite in the title game.

Hammond mentioned Farrell specifically as a player he would be recruiting to Kingston as a future teammate. The Rams are coming off a 9-22 campaign under coach Archie Miller but should be in position to improve next season. Montgomery and Green are among the four transfers, three freshmen and two junior college players who make up their incoming class. Montreal big man Jeremy Foumena should also debut as a redshirt freshman.

URI has made the majority of its most recent offers to future classes. Delaware shooting guard Bahsil Laster is entering his senior prep season and is the only new name on the immediate radar. Connecticut small forward Preston Fowler and Brooklyn shooting guard Jayden Forsythe are both currently in the Class of 2025.
