Report: Packers bringing in free agent WR Devin Smith for workout

The Green Bay Packers are gathering information on available wide receivers before Saturday’s cutdown process begins.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Packers will bring in free agent receiver Devin Smith for a workout.

Smith, a former star at Ohio State and second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2015, spent last season with the Dallas Cowboys. He was released by the Cowboys on Wednesday.

Over 18 NFL games, Smith has 15 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns. With the Cowboys last season, he caught five passes for 113 yards and a score over four games.

Smith (6-1, 205) has terrific speed (4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash) and explosive leaping ability (39″ vertical, 10-2 broad), but he’s failed to become an impact player at the NFL level.

The Packers have to be down to 53 players by Saturday afternoon. GM Brian Gutekunst is likely trying to figure out the bottom part of his receiver depth chart entering 2020.

The Packers will also visit with free agent receiver Chester Rogers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
