Report: Michigan interviews Providence's Cooley

Michigan interviewed Providence's Ed Cooley for its coaching vacancy, The Detroit News reported.

Cooley, 49, met with athletic director Warde Manuel on Monday about replacing John Beilein, who left the Wolverines to coach the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.

Manuel was also scheduled to meet with Miami Heat assistant coach and former "Fab Five" Michigan star Juwan Howard on Tuesday.

Cooley has compiled a 162-110 record at Providence since 2011, guiding the Friars to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2013-14 to 2017-18.

Cooley coached five seasons at Fairfield before that, capping that run with a 25-8 record and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title in 2010-11.

Cooley signed a 10-year extension with Providence in 2016, but buyout figures are unknown. He earned $2.6 million last season, according to the USA Today database.

Howard, 46, has been on the Heat staff since ending his 19-year NBA playing career after the 2012-13 campaign.

The Detroit News said Michigan assistants Luke Yaklich and Saddi Washington spoke with Manuel last week. Butler coach LaVall Jordan and Texas' Shaka Smart have also been mentioned in the search. Sources told the newspaper that a new coach could be named by the end of the week.
