Former Detroit Lions general manager, NFL linebacker and broadcaster Matt Millen is in a New Jersey hospital awaiting a heart transplant, NBC Sports’ Peter King reports.

Millen stepped away from his job as a Big Ten analyst on Oct. 3 to treat amyloidosis, a rare condition that produces an abnormal protein in the bone marrow that is being deposited in his heart.

Millen has been in hospital for more than 2 months

According to King, Millen has been hospitalized for 65 days and needs a new heart “fairly soon.”

From the report:

At 60, he needs a transplant fairly soon; problem is, he doesn’t know what “fairly soon” means.

Millen’s career spanned playing field to front office

Millen played 12 season in the NFL with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins. He won four Super Bowls — two with the Raiders, one with the 49ers and one with the Redskins.

Millen was the general manager of the Detroit Lions from 2001-08 and is best known for presiding over the 2008 team that finished 0-16 and led to his firing.

He spent time before and after his Lions tenure as an NFL analyst for several networks including FOX and CBS before his latest work on the Big Ten Network.

King reports that Millen says he feels fine, but won’t leave the hospital without a new heart.
