Report: Magic’s Aaron Gordon ‘not the only name the Celtics are chasing’

Word on the street on the trade deadline front is that the Boston Celtics have more than one iron in the fire, as the old adage goes.

Monday night, it became clear the Celtics were trying to be players on the trade market in earnest when news the team was matching an offer by the Houston Rockets of two first round picks for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon, with wing Evan Fournier a possible inclusion. Boston had been tied to other prospects as well over the prior 24 hours ranging from John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Atlanta Hawks to Norman Powell of the Toronto Raptors and Nemanja Bjelica of the Sacramento Kings.

Now we are hearing they have multiple serious pursuits in mind.

The Athletic's Joe Vardon relates that an NBA executive has told him that Gordon is "not the only name the Celtics are chasing," adding if he were, "the deal would be done." Vardon also notes that the Celtics often include players not on their rosters yet in such proposals, "which can frustrate colleagues looking to make a big deal." This doesn't sound like a team that plans to wait until the offseason, but then Danny Ainge and company have perhaps the most well-established reputation of being the team that almost got the deal done. And trying to tape together unwieldy beasts of a trade proposals is certainly a way to land in such a position. But then, every once in a while, those monster deals do go down.
