Report: Dolphins would ‘surprise’ with selection of Penei Sewell
With the Dolphins’ decision to cut ties with veteran guard Ereck Flowers this week, the speculation that Miami may be in the market for an offensive tackle with their top selection has ramped back up. For Miami, the top target would be Oregon’s Penei Sewell — and his candidacy for the Dolphins would likely be rooted in whether or not the top pass-catching options are there for the team at No. 6 overall.
But a new report this morning from the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson indicates that Sewell, regardless of the status of the other players taken through the first five picks.
“An NFL front office executive who was in touch with the Dolphins this week conveyed to me that he would be surprised if the Dolphins draft Sewell, based on his conversation with them,” wrote Jackson.
“A different NFL official in touch with the Dolphins this week conveyed to me he would be surprised if the Dolphins try to move up from No. 6 and that they seem content with the options at No. 6.”
The momentum for the Dolphins is clearly still on the side of trying to find weapons for second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. That isn’t to say that Miami, should they not like their options as No. 6 — which also feels unlikely — trades back and finds Sewell is then the best player available at a later time. But it feels as though there’s a lot of dominoes that need to fall in Sewell’s favor for him to get the call and become a member of the Miami Dolphins this evening.
