Report: Detroit Lions, Jared Goff have spoken on contract extension, no deal 'imminent'
The Detroit Lions got most of their big-ticket contract extensions out of the way a day before the NFL draft, but one appears likely to remain unresolved heading into Thursday's event in downtown Detroit.
Less than an hour after All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell's record contract extension was announced, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions have discussed a contract extension this offseason, but a deal is not "imminent". The Lions opened Wednesday by signing All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to a four-year extension worth more than $120 million, then locked in Sewell for four more years at $112 million total two hours later.

Goff is eligible for an extension this offseason as he enters the final year of the five-year contract he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. The 2016 No. 1 overall pick has one year remaining, worth $27.3 million in 2024, and expressed a desire to stay in Detroit long-term after the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Goff, 29, led the Lions to the franchise's first NFC championship game appearance in 32 years in his third season under center in Detroit. He put up one of the best statistical seasons of his career, throwing for 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions to finish near the top of the NFL in passing, then led the Lions past his former franchise in an emotional wild-card victory at Ford Field. Goff ranked second in the NFL in passing yards and put up three turnover-free games during the Lions' playoff run.
As he led the Lions to new heights in the 21st century, Goff has already become revered in Detroit. His name was chanted throughout the two home playoff games, the road game against the 49ers and thoughout non-football events throughout the state in January.
"In regards to my future, it’s not up to me," Goff told reporters after the season ended in January. "I love this place and we’ll see what happens as time goes on here. But yeah, I love this place and love Dan, love all the coaches, love all my teammates. It’s kind of out of my hands in some ways. It’s up to my representatives and obviously the people upstairs."
Goff will likely become one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, thanks to his recent production, and will join St. Brown and Sewell at the top of the Lions' salary sheet. There are currently 11 quarterbacks that make $40 million or more annually on their current deal, including Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow, all of whom signed deals worth more than $50 million per season in the past year. Some analysts believe $50 million a year is possible for Goff's next deal.
At the NFL scouting combine in March, general manager Brad Holmes told reporters the team was "in alignment" on how they wanted to proceed on the contract negotiation.
