Report: Colts ‘have no intention’ of giving Kenny Moore a new deal
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II is looking to renegotiate his current contract with the team and is not expected to participate in the offseason workout program until further notice.
While the Colts have valued Moore as a key part of the defense, it appears they aren’t going to budge on giving him a new deal, according to Stephen Holder of The Athletic.
Holder reported Wednesday that the Colts feel Moore signed a fair deal when he received his extension in 2019 and aren’t looking to move off of that notion anytime soon.
First of all, you should know the Colts currently have no intention of addressing Moore’s contract. Per a league source, their position is that Moore signed a fair contract in 2019 and they typically don’t renegotiate deals. Meanwhile, Moore has changed agents and appears serious about making his stance clear.
Since Chris Ballard took over as general manager in 2017, he has run a ship that typically gets deals done with their top talent in a fair way. He has given extensions to players like Darius Leonard, Braden Smith and Nyheim Hines that value near the top of their respective positions.
When Moore signed his contract extension in 2019, he was one of the highest-paid slot cornerbacks in the NFL. And while his value goes beyond that of simply a slot cornerback, the Colts still feel this is a fair deal for a player that went undrafted in 2017.
With that said, Moore has a legitimate gripe with his contract relative to players around the league. According to Over The Cap, Moore’s average annual value on his contract ($8.35 million) is the 27th highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
Regardless, this situation will hold pretty big implications for the future. Whether the Colts renegotiate or not, how they handle this will send a message to other players on the roster one way or another.
If the Colts aren’t willing to budge and Moore is serious about getting a new contract, this could turn into a bigger deal once training camp arrives.
