Report: Chiefs rookie CB L’Jarius Sneed suffered broken collarbone vs. Ravens

It appears the Kansas City Chiefs will be without one of their rookie cornerbacks for a while.

According to Kansas City Star reporter Sam McDowell, L’Jarius Sneed suffered a broken collarbone during Monday night’s 34-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Sneed suffered the injury while trying to make a play on the ball, colliding with a defender and hitting the turf hard.

Sneed, selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has been perhaps the most impactful rookie for the Chiefs. He’s allowed just 53.8% of the passes thrown his way to be caught while intercepting two passes and breaking up another. His two passes intercepted in the first two weeks of the season was good for the NFL lead.

This is a big blow to the depth of the cornerback group for Kansas City. It comes one week before reinforcements will arrive by the way of cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who is still under suspension. The Chiefs will call upon second-year CB Rashad Fenton to pick up some of the slack in the absence of Sneed. Charvarius Ward, who is dealing with the recovery from a fractured hand, was forced into last week’s game when Sneed was hurt. Expect rookie CB BoPete Keyes to be active this next week against the New England Patriots.

As for the timeline on Sneed’s recovery, it all depends on the severity of the fracture. If it’s a minor fracture there’s a strong possibility that he’ll be back later this season. If it’s more severe his timeline could vary. Look for the team to send Sneed to injured reserve later this week ahead of the Week 4 tilt with the Patriots at Arrowhead Stadium.
