Report: Boston Celtics nearly traded for ex-Warriors guard Jordan Poole

While we may never know what the parameters of the rumored deal were, new reporting from Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer revealed that the Boston Celtics might have had a trade go down with a very different look than the one that shipped out veteran point guard Marcus Smart for Washington Wizards star big man Kristaps Porzingis earlier this week..

“There were also conversations between (the) Golden State (Warriors) and Boston,” writes Fischer, “about sending (Dubs guard Jordan) Poole to the Celtics, before Boston went forward and traded Marcus Smart in the three-team trade with the Grizzlies that brought Kristaps Porziņģis to the TD Garden.”

Celtics fans should breathe a sigh of relief given that while Poole is by no means a bad player, the 24-year-old combo guard is also a very expensive one, earning $28.7 million in 2023-24.

Adding his salary would make filling out the rest of Boston’s roster even more fraught than it was after adding Porzingis’ contract to the roster — and his high-volume 33.6% from deep last season might not endear him to Celtics fans either.
