Regional wrestling roundup: New Prairie's Jeffrey Huyvaert breaks through Crown Point wall

How dominant is Crown Point, Indiana’s No. 1-ranked wrestling team?

At Saturday’s Crown Point regional, the host Bulldogs claimed 11 champions out of 14 weight classes and won the tournament by 219 points.

Oh, and of the three weight classes they didn’t win, Bulldog wrestlers were runners-up.

More: Another regional title for Penn wrestlers, but injuries also are piling up

New Prairie sophomore Jeffrey Huyvaert was one of the few able to break through Crown Point’s wall, winning the 144-pound weight class to remain undefeated on the season.

Huyvaert, 42-0, scored a 15-5 major decision over Crown Point’s Oscar Baca in the championship match. To get there, he tech falled Kankakee Valley’s Tyler Tuesburg in the semifinals, 19-4, and opened the tournament by pinning Hebron’s Matt Fisher in 2:32.

Huyvaert improved his unofficial state record for takedowns in a season to 384. And in the process, he led New Prairie to a second-place team finish with 85 ½ points. That matches the best-ever regional finish by a Cougar wrestling squad.

New Prairie’s Jeffrey Huyvaert pauses during the 138 lb. championship Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Elkhart High School. Huyvaert defeated Penn’s Wesley Harper.
