Region I-3A track and field: Idalou's Annabel Phillips bounces back; Results, takeaways

ABILENE — Annabel Phillips was almost inconsolable after the 100-meter hurdles.

The Idalou athlete's fourth-place finish meant there was no hope for advancing in the event. It was the second near-miss of the Region I-3A track and field meet, with Phillips coming in fifth in the high jump Friday at Elmer Gray Stadium.

Following Monday's race she fell into anyone's arms who offered. Luckily her coach was there to catch her.

With Phillips' final opportunity at a state-meet berth less than an hour away, hurdles coach Dana Fox did her best to get the senior off the mat. Phillips heard the encouragement she needed, and she converted it into a return trip to Austin.

Phillips placed second in the 300 hurdles to advance to state for the second consecutive year. She clocked a personal-best 44.69 seconds, an effort Fox predicted was possible.

"Coach Fox, she has me encouraged every time," Phillips said. "I knew that this was my chance, this was my race, and I needed to go after and get it. … (The 100 hurdles) was a huge disappointment. But I'm really glad it happened because it gave me the ability to run this like I did."

It was an emotional moment for all involved. Fox said the quick recovery from disappointment showed Phillips' character.

"It's something that only kids like her have," Fox said. "That internal, intrinsic motivation, that when something goes wrong they just keep going through. She's so tenacious. She gives it 100%, whatever she does. … We kept saying she had a 44-(second time) in her, and she had a 44 in her."

Shallowater's Makki Hart part of 2 records on impressive day

Makki Hart has taken to the 100 just fine.

A three-time state qualifier in the 400 entering Monday, Hart looked to add to her already impressive resume. She sewed up the 400 title, sure, but before that she showed her versatility.

Hart edged Holliday's Breagan Blowers by thousandths of a second to win the 100 in 11.77. In her first season competing in the event, Hart will head to Austin as a region champion.

"It's a fun race to be in," Hart said. "It's quick, it's fast. You really just kind of get to show off what you're able to do. The one thing that was challenging and was different about it was immediately going and running the 400 after. You have one race in between that and then I'm back on the track."

The short turnaround didn't stop Hart from running a 54.81 to win the 400. That set a region-meet record, and she wasn't finished in that department, either.

Hart also anchored the 1,600 relay to a region-record 3:55.19 with Maggie Grimes, Emie Lusk and Tatum Rentfro. Grimes and Hart have been part of consecutive gold medals in the event at state. Hart said Rentfro and Lusk have filled in well as the Fillies seek a third win.

"I'm really proud of them," Hart said. "They had big shoes to fill, and they knew that going in. They've really kept their composure and just executed everything perfectly how we wanted them to."

Muleshoe's Daniel Sianez finishes strong in 1,600 relay win

Muleshoe boys track coach Aaron Simon left the choice up to Daniel Sianez.

With a state berth in the 400 secured, Sianez decided to scratch out of the 200 to save his energy. He wanted to give his all to the 1,600 relay with his teammates.

It's fair to say Sianez's call worked out.

Sianez, who received the baton in third place, kicked over the final 100 meters to cap the Mules' mile relay win. Nathan Martens, Noah Cantu and Mauricio Herrera teamed with Sianez for a 3:19.60.

"I felt good. That last 10 meters I started smiling," Sianez said. "I already knew they weren't gonna catch up."

Simon said he saw state potential in the group from the beginning. Having that come to fruition is a testament to their effort, he said.

"I told them, 'You guys can go to state, but it's on you,'" Simon said. "I'll give you the workouts and I'll push you every day, but if you want to go to state like you keep talking about, you better work every day. And they have all year long. They're a very special group."
