Recent West York Area High School graduate dies after falling more than 50 feet off cliff

A 2020 West York Area High School graduate died after falling from a cliff Friday afternoon in Montour County, according to numerous reports.

Greg Anstine, a sophomore at Bloomsburg University, was pronounced dead at the scene in the area of Sharp Ridge Road, Mayberry Township, Montour County coroner Scott Lynn confirmed to dailyitem.com.

Anstine, 20, was walking with classmate Kyra Destefano when he began to fall, Lynn said. Destafano reached out to him and also stumbled. She grabbed a tree to stop herself and called 911 just after 3 p.m., the post said.

WKOK.com reports that ropes and harnesses were used to rescue Destafano, who fell about 50 feet from the vista known as "The Pinnacle." She was treated and then released from Geisinger Hospital.

Drones were used to locate Anstine, who fell farther than Destafano, the reports said.

A GoFundMe was started over the weekend, initially to help with funeral expenses. A new post states that the money will go into a scholarship fund for the West York boys' volleyball team, of which Anstine was a member.

Organizer Jason McSherry said the change was made after "more discussion with family and friends." As of Monday afternoon, more than three times the original goal of $5,000 had been raised.

"We all knew Greg for his character," McSherry said in the GoFundMe post. "He was a loving, caring, intelligent, and simply a great guy to be around."

Anstine was a sophomore business management major at Bloomsburg, according to his obituary.

Funeral arrangements

A Divine Liturgy will be served at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 2500 Pine Grove Road, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Mount Rose Cemetery following the service.
