A really super senior: Jacksonville's David Anthony adds another FSGA player of the year award
David Anthony of Jacksonville keeps rolling along.
Anthony earned his third Florida State Golf Association Super-Senior Player of the Year award in the last four years, thanks to three top-five finishes in statewide events.
Anthony won the Super-Senior Match Play at the Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club and finished fourth in both the Super-Senior Amateur and the Two-Man Scramble Championship, along with Steve Sponder.
"To be recognized by the state golf association in the state in which I reside is truly an honor," Anthony said in a statement. "Many thanks to the FSGA staff and the many volunteers."
In other FSGA Player of the Year awards:
Marc Dull of Lakeland is the Amateur and Mid-Amateur player of the year. The Lakeland native won the Florida Amateur by a record score in relation to par with a 17-under 271 at the Turtle Creek Club, with the largest margin of victory (seven shots) since 2013. He’s the first Mid-Amateur to win the event in 20 years.
Miles McConnell of Tampa is the senior player of the year for the third year in a row. He won the FSGA Senior Amateur by six shots at Lago Mar and combined with Pete Williams to win the Senior Four-Ball at The Founders Club.
Megan Schofill of Monticello, an Auburn junior, is the women’s player of the year. She followed a college season in which she led the Tigers in stroke average (71.67) and then won the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
Kim Keyer-Scott of Bonita Springs, who has been battling breast cancer, was still able to win the women’s senior player of the year for the two time in three years. She won the Southern Senior Amateur, finished fifth at the Florida Senior Amateur, sixth at the Florida Senior Open and reached the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.
The players of the year will be honored at the FSGA’s Annual Dinner in Orlando at Shingle Creek later this month.
Palencia goes back-to-back
The Palencia Club team of professional Matt Carroll and amateurs Jim Loftin, Tom Davis and Desi Desiderio shot a net best-ball score of 14-under 130 at the Slammer & Squire to win the Jacksonville Area Golf Association/Northern Chapter PGA Club Team Championship by two shots over the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club and the host club from the Slammer & Squire.
Palencia won last year at the other World Golf Hall of Fame course, the King & Bear.
Roman O’Rourke, Skip Lunsford, Dennis Fallen and Chad Knickerbocker were the Jacksonville G&CC team, while Jake Etherton, Dan Butterworth, Kurt Andersen and Josh Campbell made up the Slammer & Squire team.
Josh Wolfe and O'Rourke tied for low pro with 4-under 68. Jennifer Borocz of the North Florida PGA Section was third with a 71, the only other under-par gross round among the professionals.
Watch out for Nick
University of North Florida senior Nick Gabrelcik kept his spot on the final Haskins Award watch list of the fall season. That Haskins Award goes to the top college golfer of the year.
Gabrelcik helped the Ospreys to top-five finishes in all five fall events. He was among the top 10 four times, fired a school-record 62 in the Visit Knoxville Collegiate at Tennessee National and has a 68.53 scoring average.
Gabrelcik is also third on the final PGA Tour University rankings, for college seniors. The player who finishes first following the NCAA Championship in May will earn full PGA Tour status for the rest of the season.
Closing fast to make U.S. Four-Ball
Mike Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach birdied his last three holes and John Jonas of Jacksonville birdied two of his last four to lead their respective two-man teams into the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship in a qualifier at Golden Ocala.
Smith and Will Davenport of Palm City and Jonas and Richard Oref of Nashville both finished at 7-under 65 to claim the two qualifying spots. The U.S. Four-Ball will be at the Philadelphia Cricket Club May 25-29, 2024.
