Rattlers defeat Northern Arizona Wranglers in double-overtime thriller in Prescott Valley
The Rattlers defeated the Northern Arizona Wranglers 63-62 in double overtime Saturday night at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
Quarterback Drew Powell's 2-yard run, followed by an extra point in the second OT decided it.
After the Rattlers went first in overtime and scored, they had a point-after kick blocked. A penalty on NAZ caused coach Kevin Guy elect to go for two. Powell faked a handoff and kept it for the conversion, giving his team an eight-point lead.
But the defending Indoor Football League champion scored on its first play in overtime on a pass play, then converted the two-point conversion, sending it to a second overtime.
This time, NAZ (5-5) went first and, again, scored on the first play from the Rattlers' 20. The Wranglers tried for two but Dillion Winfrey stepped up to intercepted Garrett Kettle's pass in the end zone.
Powell completed a pass to the 2 on his first play in the second OT, before taking it into the end zone. Kicker Shane McInerney ended it with the extra point, splitting the uprights.
Both quarterbacks were on point, showing championship abilities.
Powell had three rushing touchdowns and five passing TDs. Kettle threw for six TDs and ran for two more for NAZ. Kettle threw a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 48 and send the game into overtime.
The Rattlers (6-4) are in second place by themselves in the Western Conference, after beating the Wranglers for the second time in three weeks.
